Editorial Reviews

CM Magazine
"The stupendous pencil sketches help readers with visualizing the story…A compelling story…especially recommended for emergent or reluctant readers, but it can be enjoyed by just about anyone."
Resource Links
"Early readers, who are just beginning to explore chapter books, will enjoy this novel."
Library Media Connection
"A delightful beginning mystery for children just entering chapter books. The characters are unique and likeable...[and] the parents are engagingly dorky and intelligent. Foreshadowing allows the readers to put together the clues to solve the mystery. Learning about endangered species adds to the relevance of the story and may let older reluctant readers feel engaged. Overall, this is a very enjoyable book. Recommended."
Canadian Children's Book News
"A good way to help emerging readers understand the fragility of the parks they may play in and, by example, urges readers to protect special places in their areas."
Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
In this story, one of the Red Dune Adventures series, twin brothers Lucas and Andre Hainey enjoy surfing—called body-boarding—with their father, a veterinarian. Their mother, always referred to as Warden Hainey, is a park warden focused on beach preservation and saving the piping plover, an endangered bird. Although Andre would rather body-board, the boys agree to help her build a mesh enclosure to protect nesting birds and their eggs from predators, particularly foxes. Unfortunately, at a closed beach that has especially good waves for body-boarding, they find broken eggshells and paw prints in an enclosure. The boys figure out that the campers whom Warden Hainey had tried to warn away the day before, trespassed there to surf and play Frisbee and allowed their dog to ravage the plovers' nest. The campers deny the charges but Lucas and Andre discover that their jeep's engine is hot, suggesting that it had recently been used, and that the dog likes to play with the Frisbee they found by the damaged enclosure. Warden Hainey expels the campers. Three saved plover eggs hatch. And the boys return to body-boarding with their father. For students who learning about piping plovers, the book contains a modicum of information. However, the story is slim, predictable, and didactic. The illustrations are stiff. The relentlessly cheerful characters never develop, and the distinctions between the twins are negligible and artificial. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
