Since children learn to speak by hearing others' language, it is no surprise that they use expressions they have heard others use even if they do not know the exact meanings of these expressions. But the origin of common English sayings can be fascinating. For example, when disciplining children, parents or teachers may use a saying that comes from baseball: "That's two strikes." They may then expect the children to understand that this means that if they act out again (or get another "strike" against them), then they will be "out" (or in deep trouble). Until they are exposed to baseball, however, children may not understand the meaning of this common saying. This book in the "It's Just an Expression" series lists numerous expressions that originate with sports and gives examples of the context in which they might be used outside the sporting world. Children will be fascinated to learn what it really means to "roll with the punches," "call the shots," and "drop the ball." When read out of context (such as in the table of contents, which gives a list of the sayings discussed in the book), some of the expressions in this book really seem to "come out of left field." But each saying is, in fact, perfectly suited for use in many non-sporting situations. Children who read this book will surely notice the next time someone says a sports-related expression in their presence, and they will feel all the wiser for knowing its origins.
