College life provides the reprieve Keith Hanson dreamed of while growing up in his father's strict household. Now, he concentrates on keeping his grades up (just enough to get Dad off his back), and loving his girlfriend Carly. He never knew life could be this good. Until a terrible accident leaves his parents killed, and Keith named as guardian over his three siblings. Although only 20, he's the one now who has to earn money to support the family and take care of the kids. Including the discipline, something his teenage sister Dana is totally lacking.

Brand new social worker Lisa Carle has a lot to prove to her boss about her ability to do a good job. But it's hard to focus on professionalism when she's falling in love with her handsome client. Can the two of them help each other? And will their budding relationship survive screaming twins, a teenage runaway and an unethical boss?

Editorial Reviews

Smashwords - Jeanne Dwyer
5 stars: Once again Laurie Larsen hit it out of the ballpark! Keeper by Surprise had some surprising suspense that left my heart beating rapidly towards the later chapters. As usual with her stories, this left me fascinated with what happens with the rest of the lives of the characters! Laurie, I think you are going to have to write some sequels! I highly recommend this for a leisurely afternoon read...you won't be disappointed.
The Book Maven blog - Book Maven
This was a really well-written contemporary romance. It manages to not only show you the romance, but the other challenges in the story really bring out frustration and you find yourself really backing the hero, Keith. It is a tough idea of putting yourself in the shoes of a young man in college who has to take over the responsibilities of being a father…especially when the children are his siblings.

Meet the Author

Laurie Larsen lives with her husband and two sons amidst the scenic cornfields of central Illinois. Her sons being the athletic creatures they are, she can bet that she’s dragged her lawn chair to every dusty baseball diamond within an hour’s radius, shivered through more football games than she can count, and cheered many a runner across the finish line across the state. Along the way, she’s taste-tested every concession stand’s offering of popcorn, hot dogs and an unusual concoction called “Walking Taco.”

As if life in Illinois isn’t exciting enough, Laurie spends her evenings in front of the computer, writing novels about love, families and relationships – everyday situations, with just a twist of worst-case scenario. Laurie’s current release, Inner Diva, is her sixth published book. Her fourth book, Preacher Man, gave her the esteemed title of Award Winning author when it won the 2010 EPIC Award for inspirational romance. How would you feel if your world suddenly turned upside down when tragedy strikes and you go from being a carefree college kid to the guardian of your younger siblings?

For Keith Hanson, a fatal car accident that took his parents lives will change his life forever when he finds out that their will has made him the guardian over his fifteen year old sister Dana and seven year old twins Leo and Linda. How does one go from being a college student to being a parent of three? Is Keith up for the challenge, or will this daunting responsibility prove to be too much for him?

Keeper by Surprise is a poignant story of one young man's challenge to become a parent to his three younger siblings after a tragic car accident takes the lives of his parents. Written in the third person narrative, author Laurie Larsen weaves a poignant tale of heartbreak, reality, growth, responsibility and resilience that will simply pull at your heart strings. The daunting challenges that Keith faces in his journey to provide a stable family dynamic for his siblings provides enough twists and turns that engages the reader's emotions. And with young social worker, Lisa Carle, Keith finds a new romance that blossoms along the way, until a deeply held secret by Lisa threatens to destroy them.

Keeper by Surprise is a warmhearted story written with thoughtfulness and a dose of reality. Author Laurie Larsen does a wonderful job of weaving a tale of love of family with a tender romance in the mix. This coming of age and ready made family story demonstrates the resilience of love to overcome life's challenges, and that love really does conquer all.

Another hit by award winning, multi-published author, Laurie Larsen.
Keeper By Surprise is an expertly blended mix of originality, tenderness and passion. The title is a metaphor to Keith Hanson’s life in more ways than one. The growth in this romance covers more than the love of a man and woman but of a family. Ms. Larsen uses her experienced writing talents to weave through the vast changes Keith ventures through as the oldest of four. His love interests take an unexpected yet natural turn as he tackles the challenges set in his path with humble bravery and realistic responsibility. As with other books written by Ms. Larsen, I read this one in two days and highly recommend it.

For a story that begins as a nice, little college romance, it sure covers a vast amount of serious topics. Laurie Larsen is an excellent author who has developed some very believable characters who go through some harsh circumstances. They grow and learn as a result, and they all end up growing in ways they never dreamed possible.

I did grow tired of the profanity, but thankfully the bedroom scene was not too detailed. I was even impressed that some of the characters were committed to remaining virgins. I also liked seeing the change that occurred in Dana and the twins. And Keith was finally willing to accept the responsibility he was given. I would have preferred a less cheesy ending. Don't get me wrong--the book ended as it should have. But during the last twenty pages or so, cheesiness made it appearance. Some of the book seemed a little bit too unrealistic, but I guess true romantics would love these pages.

I liked the fact that the author was able to introduce some elements into the book that were not entirely predictable. I can't imagine ever having to deal with something like Keith did, but it's good to see that adversity can build character, sometimes even when you don't want it to. I am pleased that the author emphasized the conscience and making sure one always does what is right. While I do not share all the morals that these characters do--I go much further to the right than they do--it was still nice to see characters that truly had principles. Oh, and the unprincipled characters got what was coming to them.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

    Life isn't always fair
You think you've got troubles? Meet Keith Hanson. He's got some REAL problems and they keep getting worse. His parents' deaths leave him guardian of seven-year-old twins and a snotty teenager. Sprinkle in a dragon lady out to get him and it's amazing his hormones kick in at all--except the charming Lisa Carle is not a woman to ignore. A sweet romance with heartbreak and triumph thrown in.
