Basically the same as the 1st edition, with a different cover & a little rearranging of the contents. If you own the 1st edition, there's no need to buy the 2nd edition - they're basically the same.

This is an excellent book for anyone wishing to have a small, backyard flock of chickens. It provides all the basic knowledge needed, a few recipes & describes the various breeds. It's been well-researched to enable anyone to provide the best for their chickens, enjoy them & get the best from them. There's very practical advice about hygiene, various diseases or illnesses they can get & how to care for them, keeping them clean, how to care for them during winter weather & how to protect yourself from salmonella - the authors do a very good job of covering all the bases! Having grown up on a chicken farm, I'm impressed with the book - there's very little difference between the 1st edition & this 2nd edition. I was a little disappointed, because I thought there would be additional knowledge that perhaps wasn't provided in the 1st edition. It's an excellent book, well-researched & knowledgeable, good reading! If you're interested in raising a few chickens, I highly recommend you read this book before you start!

    Good coffee table book

I bought this to use a reference for my new backyard chickens. I returned it and bout Homemade Living: Keeping Chickens. This book has beautiful pictures of chickens which is why it would make a good coffee table book. But as a reference for a beginning urban chicken keeper, it didn't have enough basic information. I wanted something more hands on; building a coop, care and feeding, health issues, etc.
