Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of five in the "Let's Read and Talk About" series, this edition focuses on defining what it means to be fit and what elementary aged students can do to maintain fitness. Twelve mini chapters define and discuss the importance of being physically fit, why fitness is important to overall wellness, what to do to achieve and maintain fitness, provides examples of exercises, the steps to take to get your body ready for exercise as well as the kinds of foods to eat, and types of clothing to wear to facilitate exercise. Designed to make fitness "interesting and easy," the book utilizes a question and answer format, color photos of youngsters practicing good fitness and boxed topics for discussion. The overall tone is encouraging with suggestions to get started right away whether alone or with a partner or group. A glossary of highlighted new vocabulary and an index are included at the end of the book. It makes it seem like getting fit is an adventure that youngsters would enjoy participating in. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 3—4—Each spread in this appealing series raises and answers one broad question about social and physical health and a handful of related queries, providing information that is succinct yet satisfying. "Talk About" text boxes offer age-appropriate conversation starters, which are especially valuable for parents and classroom teachers dealing with tough subjects such as bullying and divorce. Sporadic "Take Action" text boxes encourage readers to employ their new knowledge-e.g., change compromised online passwords or have a bread-tasting session. Each volume also has a page dedicated to questions stemming from the book as a whole. The texts are supported by robust glossaries, labeled diagrams, and captioned color photographs of multicultural children. Family is notable for its inclusion of nontraditional families (including same-sex and foster) as well as its breadth of topics covered.
