Overview

Carrick Francis has spent most of his life jumping into trouble with both feet. The only thing saving him from prison or worse is his absolute devotion to Deacon Winters. Deacon was Crick's sanity and salvation during a miserable, abusive childhood, and Crick would do anything to stay with him forever. So when Deacon's father dies, Crick puts his college plans on hold to help Deacon as Deacon has helped him.

Deacon's greatest wish is to see Crick escape his memories and the town they grew up in so Crick can enjoy a shining future. But after two years of growing feelings and temptation, the painfully shy Deacon finally succumbs to Crick's determined advances and admits he sees himself as part of Crick's life.

It nearly destroys Deacon when he discovers Crick has been waiting for him to push him away, just like Crick's family did in the past. When Crick's knack for volatile decisions lands him far away from home, Deacon is left, shell-shocked and alone, struggling to reforge his heart in a world where love with Crick is a promise, but by no means a certainty.

    ANOTHER AMAZING STORY amy lane

This story starts with a Prologue of Carrick James Francis finishing his 2 years in Iraq. There was a terrible explosion, with Carrick losing consciousness. Before going under he thinks "Oh goddammit Deacon, I should have given you more time."

With that our story begins with Carrick as a nine year old lost little boy, wandering along a dusty road, on the horse farm of Parish Winters called The Pulpit in Northern California. We learn that Carrick, Crick for short has had a terrible childhood, an abusive step father and an allowing mother. Parish and his 14 year old son Deacon become the only bright spot in this young boy's life. Through school Deacon becomes more and more important to him. Crick realizes his hero worship and crush is so much more than the love of a brother.. Crick realizes he is different, and is not growing up" liking girls". One day swimming with Deacon and his friend Jon, Crick realizes he loves Deacon and wants a life with him.

Parish has a fatal heart attack and Deacon puts his college plans on hold to run the ranch as his Dad did and also take care of Crick as his brother. We learn that he has always wanted Carrick to realize his dreams being a talented artist. Deacon wants him to leave their town and his horrible family that cast him out. Carrick has other plans. The day after their friends Jon and Amy's wedding held at Promise Rock, Crick and Deacon have cleanup detail. That day Crick plans, with his heart on his sleeve, his seduction of his love. Deacon seemed to know it was coming, and was happily prepared for it. After their beautiful encounter that afternoon, Deacon who is painfully shy, did NOT say what Crick wanted to hear quickly enough and Crick, always feeling like the other shoe would fall and Deacon would cast him out takes the long silence as rejection.

The reader now has to suffer the pain of these 2 beautiful young men and their 2 year separation. You see Crick joined the Army and was sent to Iraq. This is a heart wrenching tale only the powerful storytelling of Amy Lane can deliver. To ease some of the more painful times of this separation Ms Lane has the young men writing, texting and twittering. This is the only thing that will make you smile. The finale , the explosion, with Carrick almost dying almost does Deacon in. The story spans the 2 years of our two loves trying to survive without each other.

To conclude, Ms Lanes dynamic picture of the ranch, the side characters, and the love story is something NOT TO MISS As always Ms Lanes storytelling abilities surpass the norm. The M/M genre is somehow secondary with such a dynamic love story.

Keeping Promise rock starts out with a bang. Literally. The story starts in Iraq then goes back to when Crick first met Deacon and why. The story encompasses both men’s lives in a very sweet interesting way. This book is also well written and formatted and so easy to read with chapters separated with catchy chapter titles that pull you into the next chapter like magnets. No page numbers or author names in the middle of the page like in most eBooks s I have read.
Crick met Deacon when he was eight and was immediately stricken; Deacon is several years older but was drawn to Crick immediately. Deacon and his father took in lots of young boys as muckrakers   on the ranch and helped them to have better lives. Crick was special to both Deacon and his father.  Crick new in his teen years that he was gay and that deacon was the one for him, even though he though Deacon was straight he was happy to have a deep relationship together.
This is such a beautifully written story of a love that can survive anything and boy is there lots of obstacles in the way here.  Once you pick this book up be prepared, you won’t want to put it down. There are twists and turns on every page. You will laugh and cry and sigh. A lot.
I recommend this story if you like lots of characters, including, Soldiers, cowboys (ranchers) EMT’s and young children having to grow up fast. If you like drama, twists and turns, enduring love, and just a darn good story I highly recommend this one. Grab some tissues, cocoa and your cuddly blanket and settle down for a great book!
