Overview

After taking up surfing to pass the time during family trips to the beach, Floridian Kelly Slater discovered that he had a passion for surfing, and found that it brought him more peace and satisfaction than anything else.

Training with his brother, Kelly soon began surfing in amateur competitions, and scored his first victory at the age of eight. After graduating high school and taking up surfing full time, Kelly turned pro and began competing with surfers around the world in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship.

After a bumpy first season, Kelly Slater spent nearly a decade as the top surfer in the ASP. Fame followed, with appearances on TV and in movies, and a high profile romance with his Baywatch costar Pamela Anderson.

But the fame and fortune meant little to Kelly. Instead, he remained focused on his surfing, pursuing world records and challenging young upstarts who sought to take his title as the world's greatest surfer. It was the birth of his daughter Taylor in 1996, though, that truly put Kelly's life into perspective and showed him what mattered most.
