No Dj 8vo. pp. x, (4), 291, "While much (1/2) of this book deals with the literary career of Saro-Wiwa, there is ... sufficient balance in those essays to give a rounded, contextulaized sense of the work's impact on the community. Political essays by McLaren, Bastian, and Nixon are scupulously balanced...The annotated bibliography is a gold mine; it will remain definitive for several years to come." Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
In a dozen essays, scholars of literature from Africa and North America explore the literary and political efforts of Saro-Wiwa (1941-95) who was executed by the Nigerian government during his fight to prevent the further exploitation of his Ogoni people by the Shell Oil Company. They begin with overviews of the political and economic situation, his place in it, and the practice of genocide in Nigeria. Then they look at the literary experiments, the public man, popular media, and seven poems. Appended are chronologies of his life and the Nigerian civil war, and an annotated bibliography. Christmas Reminder

This measured book covers business, literature, politics, the environment, popular culture and offers a tremendous source of further readings. It reminds us of the real meaning of Christmas--not commerce, but rather the workings of a human spirit, perhaps flawed, that tried to improve life for a signficant number of people. That Ken Saro-Wiwa died in his efforts underscores the value of and relationship to the Christian holiday.

Ken Saro-Wiwa: Writer and Political Activist

This book accomplishes its aims--a comprehensive and new examination of Saro-Wiwa as writer and political animal. It's a little academic and overly literary for general readers. Yet, the bibliography is worth the price of purchase.

Ken Saro-Wiwa: Writer and Political Activist

This apraisal of Saro Wiwa is very thorough and a bit academic, but everything you need to know is here. The cost is incredible! Thats why its not getting another star.
