Overview

This history of John Kennedy's presidency is a compendium of biographies of major and minor figures in the political and celebrity landscape of those years. The entries are in alphabetical order and cover the subjects' careers with particular emphasis on their work during the Kennedy administration. They include not only the obvious players, such as Robert McNamara, but also more peripheral characters, such as Frank Sinatra and Hannah Arendt. The introduction reviews important events during the Kennedy years and a chronology, a list of contemporary governors and members of congress, and a selection of primary documents help to create a context for the biographical details. VOYA
In this publisher's reliable format, this updated volume briefly details the biographies of several hundred people who shaped public policy in the early 1960s. Each entry is alphabetically arranged and gives birth and death dates, title, activity or occupation, career, accomplishments, and ideology. The useful appendixes include membership of the 87th and 88th Congresses, the Kennedy cabinet, Supreme Court, regulatory agencies, and a list of state governors. Especially helpful for the researcher are the bibliography and primary source documents located here. The eight-page John F. Kennedy entry, the longest in the volume, concentrates on the president's political rise and policies while in office. The reader learns that foreign policy was his major focus and that he was "more timid" domestically, only belatedly dealing with the economy and the struggle for civil rights. Two sentences cover his assassination, and two paragraphs, his legacy. Although the entries are brief, they are inclusive enough to give the reader a good understanding of the person and his or her importance and relationship to the period. Siracusa writes clearly and objectively, using historical perspective; his introduction is an excellent overview and a pleasure to read. Print is adequate and paper quality average, but the small, black-and-white photographs are definitely a disappointing feature of this otherwise highly commendable reference book. 2004, Facts on File, 616p.; Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Chronology. Appendix., PLB Ages 11 to Adult.

Gr 9 Up-Kennedy is a revised edition of a title originally published in 1976 as part of the "Political Profiles" series (Facts on File); Clinton is a new work in this new series. Each volume begins with a lengthy introduction that summarizes major events of each administration, beginning with the election campaign. Following this is an A-to-Z section of approximately 350 profiles in the first volume and 250 in the second. These concise biographical entries include major political figures from each term of office and discuss the relationship of the person to the administration. The articles in Kennedy cover only U.S. personalities, while those in Clinton include important world leaders. The volumes conclude with a chronology of the administration; lists of the members of Congress, the Supreme Court Justices, Executive Departments staffs, and state governors; and primary documents, which include the texts of speeches and treaties. A few average-quality, black-and-white photographs appear in each volume. The inclusion of primary sources makes these titles particularly valuable resources for research.-Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
