Overview

It's Tri-County fair time and Lake Eden, Minnesota, is buzzing with more than mosquitoes. Hannah Swensen, owner of The Cookie Jar, is hot on the trail of a killer whose perfect carnival prize would be getting away with murder...

It promises to be a busy week for Hannah Swensen. Not only is she whipping up treats for the chamber of commerce booth at the fair; she's also judging the baking contest; acting as a magician's assistant for her business partner's husband; trying to coax Moishe, her previously rapacious feline, to end his hunger strike, and performing her own private carnival act by juggling the demands of her mother and sisters.

With so much on her plate, it's no wonder Hannah finds herself on the midway only moments before the fair closes for the night. As the lights click off, she realizes that she's not alone among the shuttered booths and looming carnival attractions. After hearing a suspicious thump, she goes snooping - only to discover Willa Sunquist, a student teacher and fellow bake contest judge, dead alongside an upended key lime pie. But who would want to kill Willa and why? Before long Hannah is sifting through motives and a list of suspects which include a high school student Willa flunked, the hot-blooded brothers of a disqualified beauty contestant, a rodeo cowboy, a baking competitor who failed to win her yearly blue ribbon, and the college professor Willa was dating.

As fair week draws to a close, Hannah cranks up the heat, hoping that the killer will get rattled and make a mistake. If that happens she intends to be there, even if it means getting on a carnival ride that could very well be her last...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The yummy eighth smalltown cozy from Fluke (after 2006's Cherry Cheesecake Murder) finds sometime sleuth Hannah Swensen, owner of the Cookie Jar in Lake Eden, Minn., judging the baking contest at the Tri-County Fair. When one of her fellow judges, home economics teacher Willa Sunquist, is murdered, Hannah determines to sniff out the killer. Was it a man from Willa's mysterious past? Or a student she flunked? Fluke has developed a charming supporting cast--Hannah's besotted (and slightly spineless) two suitors, her overbearing but likable mother, her endearing sisters and her levelheaded business partner all feel like friends by the time the murder is solved. The dozens of tempting recipes Fluke includes are an added treat. (Mar.)

    I Also Recommend:

Food, Murder and Mayhem, what is wrong with that???

How can you go wrong with a good read, great and easy recipes, and interesting characters? Joanne Fluke has the formula to keep me buying her books time after time. I love to read culinary mysteries and then make the receipes included. Her receipes have to be the easiest written, no sifting? That's my kind of cookie! I've wished that Hannah would choose between Mike and Norman, but then I would probably get bored reading about how utterly happy she is. I love the fact that Hannah isn't 5'6", blond and a size 2, she's a real woman with a brain and faults and I can connect with her. I will keep on going to Lake Eden, Minnesota as long as Hannah keeps on giving great receipes and continues to work through her feelings for Norman and Mike while keeping her Mother at bay.

    Key Lime Pie Murder

This is light reading but engaging; the recipes are a wonderful accompaniment; it continues to keep you guessing who the suitor may be for the main character. I recommend this book for a lazy afternoon.

    School Teachers

Why would any one want to kill one of Lake Eden¿s schoolteachers during the fair? Joanne Fluke is a master at creating mysteries around food and the recipes make you want to get up and bake.

    Disappointing

We read this book for our Book Club and I was really excited because it sounded fun to read and have recipes as well. But, I was very disappointed. The story and dialogue were just so unbelievable and unrealistic. These events and conversation would never happen in real life.

ANOTHER ENJOYABLE BOOK IN THIS SERIES

I've read several books in this series and have enjoyed each one. If you enjoy mysteries by Tori Carrington, Selma Eichler and Janet Evanovich, you'll love the Hannah Swensen series by Joanne Fluke -- they're fun to read, with lots of twists and turns throughout the story.

Great cozy mystery set around a fair

Hannah agrees to help judge the baking contest at the Tri-County fair in Lake Eden. She¿s also providing treats for the Chamber of Commerce booth from her bakery The Cookie Jar. And then she is coaxed into helping Herb out as his magician¿s assistant. Plus her cat, Moishe, has apparently gone on a hunger strike. The last thing Hannah expects to find at the fair is Willa Sunquist, her fellow bake contest judge and a junior college teacher, murdered. But she does. Willa was also in charge of the beauty contest Hannah¿s sister Michelle is in. Hannah discovers there are plenty of suspects and finds herself in the middle of everything trying to solve her murder. Plus she¿s trying to get Moishe to eat. Norman, one of her beaus, also tries to help with Moishe. Can Hannah find the killer without becoming a victim herself? I love this series. The food and mystery always go hand in hand. I want to try out some of the wonderful sounding recipes. I like how the author shows us Hannah¿s daily life but without boring us. I hope that Hannah will make a decision between Norman and Mike soon. I enjoyed this story being set around the fair. Fairs are such fun activities. I like how the author has built up Lisa¿s character over the books. I really enjoy her. I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

    The worst of the series

I was looking forward to this book and have been very disappointed. While all of the other books were entertaining from beginning to end, this one is dull. The book is about a murder, however it does not occur until after you read the first 100 or so pages. Even then, the investigation into the murder is slow and seems to take a back step to the other events going on. If this were any other book I would have put it down after the first 30 or so pages. I only finished the book because I am a fan of the series and want to keep updated on what's going on with the characters. Hopefully Fluke is not one and will do better on her next book.

    delicious amateur sleuth

In lake Eden, Minnesota, Hannah Swensen owns the successful Cookie Jar, but this week she is spending more time out of her store except for baking her specialties. Residents and visitors are attending the Tri-County Fair with the Great Northwestern Rodeo and Carnival as part of the festivities so Hannah is keeping her customer the Chamber of Commerce supplied with cookies, judging a baking contest, and serving as a magician¿s assistant. Hannah also worries about her cat Moise who has gone off his feed spending most of his time looking out the window. --- One night while she works the fair, she learns that the carnival box office was robbed. Later that night she finds the murdered body of her fellow baking judge Willa Sundquist and notices the vague outline of the man she assumes is the killer. Unable to resist especially since she liked the victim, Hannah investigates, which turns into a family affair when her sisters and her business partner join her. --- Do not read this novel on an empty stomach as the sixteen dessert recipes will cause a sweet craving. Joanne Fluke has baked a delicious amateur sleuth with an eccentric support cast that keeps the tale light and fluffy but tasty and fun. There are plenty of suspects, and Hannah finds it rough going but she and her cohorts persevere because she wants to insure that the killer gets his or her just desserts. --- Harriet Klausner
