Overview

1,000 years ago Earth colonized the planet Charm. But the population of Charm is now far removed from their ancient ancestors. Technology has been lost over the years but the people have something better--Magic! Charm is a world covered by volcanoes, each erupting a different color of magic. Everything within a particular Chroma becomes that color. Plants, animals, insects, and even humans all become one color and can perform that color of magic. Traveling is dangerous because a person leaving their native Chroma home can no longer perform their color magic. Havoc is a barbarian living in a non-Chroma village, where no one has magic. As a boy, he rescued a dragon that rewarded him with special magic; to sense pending danger. His gift becomes more valuable than he can imagine as he is suddenly drafted and forced to become the new king of the planet. He must perform his duties or be executed for treason. To make matters worse, the assassin who killed the former king is now after Havoc!

Read an Excerpt

Assassination! Havoc continued calling out names, and the arrests were publicly made. Suddenly an arrow flew from above the audience. It struck the figure of Havoc in the face, and exploded. Gale and the child in red screamed and clutched each other. The king's head became a fireball. Then the body fell, headless. The crown that should have protected the king was still sitting at the side of the stage, supposedly forgotten. Havoc had done his best to trigger an assassination attempt, and had succeeded. King Havoc is dead!" a Representative cried. A female figure appeared, completely red, glowing with the aura of her power. "Not quite," she said, her voice dulcet yet possessed of vital authority.

    Boring and too long

I normally like piers anthony a lot so purchased this entire series. Unfortunately. This one is not good . The rest are worse. The story takes 450+ pages to to cover something that should have been edited to maybe 200 pages. Way too much repetitive focus on sex and not enough focus on story. What happened to good storey telling?

    Not as advertised

More than 25 years ago, I purchased a Piers Anthony trilogy titled "Double Exposure" that I liked so much, I have read it at least five times. That book had a strong sex subplot that was neither so intrusive as to overwhelm the main plot nor objectionable in its detail. This book, however, is just the opposite. It is so overwhelmingly smutty that it buries any real story plot. In fact, the first chapter is pure kiddie porn, a recurring theme throughout the remaider of the book. The book is tedious to read and has chapters that are so long I almost forgot what the previous chapter was about at the end of each chapter I read. It needs heavy editing to make it readable, even as a pure pornography offering. As written, this book belongs on the shelves of an adult book store. I am not a prude by any measure. What I object to is being ambushed into buying a book like this without being properly warned that it is XXX rated and carries so little worthwhile story content. I have absolutely no plans of purchasing or even borrowing any of the remaining books in this series!

Mr. Anthony can DEFINITELY write more than Xanth novels!

This has got to be THE best book I've read by Piers Anthony in a long time, and I've ready several of his books (and a few short stories). The story involves a young barbarian becoming plantery ruler even though he doesn't want to. His subjects are loyal (and not because of his title), his problems are few but major, and he dodge's assassination attempts while doing what he agreed to - solve the four major problems that are before the planet. And he does so in interesting and slightly odd ways - ways that others had not considered or thought of. The best part - I'm left wanting more! That's why I've purchased the 2nd book also, and there is no doubt in my mind that I'll find it just as good (maybe better than) the first one. I have every intention of buying #3 also, because if #2 ends the same way, I will have lots of questions, and I will want the answer :) Please give this a shot - rumor has it that a 4th & 5th may be written if 1 - 3 do well. I want to know everything about Chroma (the planet the book takes place on) that I can!!

I totally enjoy this new fantasy world from Piers Anthony--and it is not Xanth!

This is the first book in a fantasy series called the Chromagic series. This is a fantastic book with a brand new world with a magic system that blow me away. A planet long ago colonized by humans and disconnected with Earth thereafter. What people didn't know is that it had volcanoes that created magical fields that affect people, animals and plants turning them in whatever color the volcano spouts (red, yellow, green, black, white, etc...). The main story is quintessential Piers. The main character Havoc is taken away from his village and his love, Gale, to the big capital city and force to become King of the Chroma. Kingship has its privilage but not if someone wants to kill you and that is one of the many challenges that Havoc needs to deal with with the help of his girlfriend Gale and other interesting characters that he encounted in the castle. There is a secret menace, a dark mystery, love and passion and lot of adventures. This is not a kiddie book a la Xanth. This is an adult novel with a lot of sex and blood but with a Piers' twist. If you like Piers and enjoy reading such things as Apprentice Adept or Bio of an Space Tyrant, this is the novel and the series for you. Enjoy!
