Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Samantha Kepler and her middle school friends solve two mysteries here—they find a model train that had been on display in her father's restaurant, and they find a missing charm that has much sentimental value. Of course, the amateur detectives are ably assisted by Wishbone, the Jack Russell terrier owned by Samantha's friend, Joe Talbot. The model train featured in this story is owned by the gruff Mr. Ottinger, whose great granddaughter Isabel just moved into town. Samantha and her friends pursue several leads to solve the mysteries, guided by a novel entitled The Moonstone by Willkie Collins, that Samantha is reading. The references to this novel may confuse young readers, who are unlikely to be familiar with the book. Although the cast of engaging characters is the same, this chapter book did not quite measure up in terms of plot and dialogue to previous titles in the publisher's "Wishbone Mysteries" series. 1999 (orig. 1998), Gareth Stevens, $21.27. Ages 7 to 12. Reviewer:Jeanne K. Pettenati
