Overview

This book is designed to provide training guidance through a wealth of readings, self-assessments, planning sheets, training tools, and other forms of learning exercises. These materials have proved to be effective in sharpening the skills of thousands of instructors and course designers who have participated in more than 400 train-the-trainer workshops that the author has conducted over the years. The emphasis is on teaching in order to make changes in behavior.

This book consists of 40 chapters divided into nine sections. At least one learning exercise appears in each chapter. The chapters are arranged in the natural flow of activities associated with the preparation and instruction of a new course. The sections are: Training-The Key to Performance Improvement; Analyzing the Need for Training; Designing a Training Program; Developing a Training Program; Sharpening Your Instructional Skills; Teaching Inductively and Deductively; Using Training Tools Effectively; Transferring Behavior From the Workshop to the Workplace; and Measuring the Effectiveness of Training.

Workshops and courses on human resource development can benefit from the activities and exercises in these chapters. This book can also be used as a self-study program for individuals who wish to sharpen their instructional competencies.

What People Are Saying

Harry H. Thompson ll
Harry H. Thompson II,President Thompson-Mitchell & Associates, Inc.

Scott Parry, one of the few Hall of Famers in the HRD industry, shares his 40 years of experience in a practical, realistic, and interesting manner in Training for Results. This book is 'must reading' for any HRD professional who is focusing on increasing performance and productivity in his or her organization. Scott Parry shares the rationale for why it's important to follow proven guidelines for effective training, as well as provides practical 'how tos' enforced by realistic examples."

Howard Ladewig
Howard Ladewig, Professor and Graduate Programs Coordinator Department of Agricultural Education Texas A&M University

Scott Parry provides a systematic, understandable, and useful approach to training and development, including understanding learning, use of appropriate tools, and a focus on the proposed outcome of training. In this age of accountability, the section on "Measuring Effectiveness of Training" should prove quite valuable. If you don't know about training and development tools and approaches, this book is for you. For those with more advanced knowledge, this book will prove to be an excellent reference.

Leo C. Croteau
Leo C. Croteau, Manager, Organizational Development,NPPD Cooper Nuclear Station

As a former training manager at a nuclear power plant in the Midwest, and currently employed as a manager of organizational development, I can visualize the simplicity of this book as an effective tool for both disciplines. This book has well-organized and easy-to-follow modules that can be very useful in many applications.

Training for Results is a brilliant integration of the theoretical concepts, facts, and explicit methods for behavior modification, which I have learned from Dr. Scott Parry over the past twenty years. Parry's systems approach to learning was well established before the word 'system' ever became fashionable. Novice and senior organization development practitioners alike can benefit from his wisdom, wit, and pragmatic 'how to' approach.
