Overview

Izzy and Julia have been on the same team for years. Izzy is frustrated that Julia spends too much time cherry-picking and getting all the credit when they score. But when someone starts threatening the team and their home field is sabotaged, the friends must work together to find the answers. Why would someone threaten their star player? And what is the connection to a century-old train robbery and the rumor of buried treasure? Trying to solve the mystery and keep the team in the playoff race, Izzy and Julia find themselves in deeper than they thought, and in more danger than they imagined.

Izzy and Julia are on the soccer team. They are best friends, but sometimes it is hard for Izzy to ignore the way Julia is always cherry-picking, but, as a good friend, she finds a way to let the bad feelings go. The girls soon discover, however, that not everyone is so forgiving, and someone has decided to show Julia just how much they dislike her cherry-picking. The team's home field is sabotaged. Julia is receiving threatening, untraceable text messages, and to make matters worse the team is not allowed back on their own field. Calls have come in saying that the land is contaminated with lead. This forces the city to close down the field for further investigation. What is even stranger is that these new occurrences might have something to do with a century-old train robbery and buried treasure. It is up to the girls to figure just what is going on. One of the most admirable traits of this book is the author's ability to seamlessly bring together several storylines. The prose is economic and direct. The characters are likable enough, though I often forgot just how old they were supposed to be. There were times when I thought them young, in pre-adolescence. At other times they seemed older, but all in all this is a book that manages to hold the reader's interest to the very end. It is recommended and would make a nice gift for the adventurous soccer player in your life.

Ausby drew back his fist. "Back off, pal," he snarled. "I'm armed, but I don't want to use it. Make the little girl give me the bag, and I'll be on my way. If you don't, there's going to be a whole bunch of people hurt here today."
