Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this combination book and toy—a tool belt and shaped books are all in one nice package. The books, of which there are four, are shaped like the various tools that one might find in the hands of a carpenter or just a general Mr. Fix-it. There is a screwdriver, a hammer, a wrench, and a pair of pliers. Young readers will be able to learn in the shaped book, the primary function of each of these tools. For example, wrenches are used to turn things. They can either make them tight or make them loose. The example demonstrates tightening a nut on the wheel of the bicycle. What can you do with a hammer? They are used to pound and usually hammers pounds nails. Many hammers have a claw portion which can be used to remove nails, a great solution to fixing mistakes. While the illustration presents a completed birdhouse, having made one myself, I know there are lots of steps not described that are required before you have a final product like the one shown in this book. No matter, young kids will enjoy putting on the apron with the pockets and putting their books in them and pretending that they are the handyman around the house. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
