Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Two comic novels portray the struggles of middle-grade boys trying to fit in. Ages 8-12. (Apr.)
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 Park commiserates with the problems of pre-adolescence in this first-person narrative of ten-year-old Howard Jeeter, whose life is temporarily destroyed by a cross-country move to a new family home. Howard knows what awaits him as he drives east from Arizona with his insensitive parents, bawling baby brother, and smelly basset hound to a historic house in Massachusetts: he will be a vulnerable and possibly despised ``new kid.'' His first contact on Chester Pewe St. is Molly, an intrusive first-grader with red hair ``styled kind of like Bozo's.'' Her desperate attempts to be friendly drive Howard to distraction and also make him anxious that his new classmates won't accept him if he hangs around a first grader. Howard's coming to terms with Molly's need for friendship is a particularly well-done part of the novel. As in Operation: Dump the Chump (1982) and Beanpole (1983, both Knopf), Park writes in a witty and bittersweet style about the awkward, super-sensitive age of early adolescence; her humor both reflects and sharpens the sensibilities of her readers in the areas of family and friend relationships. Another first-rate addition by this author to the middle-grade popular reading shelf. Linda Wicher, Lincolnwood Public Library, Ill.

Meet the Author

Barbara Park is one of  today's funniest and best-loved writers for middle graders.  Her novels, which include Dear God, HELP!!! Love Earl; Skinnybones; The Kid in the Red Jacket; and Mick Harte Was Herehave won numerous children's book awards.  Barbara thinks that the wonderful thing about writing humor is that she is able to deal with serious issues in a more lighthearted way.  Barbara's fans always want to know whether or not her characters are based on her own children (she has two sons) — in fact, they are not.  But having her sons has made it easier for her to know how kids talk and think.  What matters most to Barbara is that her books are bringing a few smiles to her readers.

Barbara lives in Paradise Valley, Arizona, with her husband, Richard. She holds a B.S. from the University of Alabama.

Perfect for someone that is new at school

This book is about a kid named Howard Jeeter that moves to a new state, Massachusetts. When he gets there, his mom sends him to school on their second day there. He thinks it's the horror of his life. Anyways, he makes new friends after a while. But his biggest horrors are across the street. His neighbor Molly Vera Thompson.

Hilarious!!!! A laugh out loud book!

This book is about the hardships of moving. New school, new people, and trying to get a chance to get used to your own house! But that can all be hard when you have an annoying little girl that lives right next door!

This story is about a boy named Howard. He moves from Arizona to Massachusetts. He doesn't want to move though because he'll miss his friends Thornsberry and Roger. He ends up being friends with Ollie and Roger but with some difficulty getting there. After all Howard doesn't think it's so bad living in Massachusetts.

The Kid in the Red Jacket

I love this book! Molly Vera Tompson is such a charactor. The comments that Howard makes and the way he compares things are hilarious. You should try this book, you in for a GREAT book.
