Overview

After knowing friends with anorexia and being baffled by their behavior, Laura Moisin suddenly found herself prone to the same disease—not eating at all and going weeks at a time consuming nothing but water and the occasional black coffee. Deceiving therapists by misleading them with symptoms of depression, her anorexia is prolonged, and her health deteriorates rapidly. Recognizing that she has a serious disorder, she quickly finds a therapist working at her university and openly confesses that she’s an anorexic seeking treatment. Her therapist looks at her doubtfully and says, shockingly, "No, I don’t think you’re an anorexic.” Already swirling in a state of confusion, the attacks on New York’s World Trade Center—an event the author witnessed first-hand from her apartment—only accelerate her path to further self-destruction. Without preaching, this memoir offers a reassuring first-hand voice for the many who suffer silently, and provides strength for family and friends to help heal destructive behaviors.

Editorial Reviews

Bookshipper
A heartwrenching, honest and beautiful book written by someone who has been there and has lived to tell about it.
Shelf Life
An inspirational book for anyone else dealing with similar dangerous behaviors.
Library Journal

The subtitle says it all. As a young woman, Moisin was ravaged by anorexia made worse by depression and posttraumatic stress after she witnessed the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9/11. Her vivid depictions of those conditions are so compelling that readers will feel as though they, too, are experiencing trauma. Luckily, Moisin transcends darkness to discover the possibilities of life. Other survivors and sufferers will appreciate her story.

    Laura Moisin Knows Her Stuff

I have read my fair share of ED books, but Laura Moisin really knows how to write. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to find a book on an interesting topic, but also one that is well written.

She wrote an incredible, can't-put-it-down book of her whirlwind with anorexia.

Moisin has no fear in telling her story. She refuses to hold back any detail. She is okay with not looking glamorous in these events, which could not have been told any other way. Her strength in letting go and showing what happened behind the scenes is something to be commended.

Touching true story that will shock you.

Once I started reading this book I didn't want to put it down. Laura goes into the depths of going from a model student to an empty shell. Battling an eating disorder myself, this true account really opening my eyes up to just how much worse the illness could be, and a measure of the pain and suffering one person can endure in such a short amount of time. I understood the mentality of what Laura suffered and I too suffered with her. Kid Rex is definitely a mind-opener for those who only believe Anorexia to be a way of getting attention.

There is so much love between these pages - love from parents, siblings, and a boyfriend who stuck with her to the very end. Love you didn't even know existed between human beings. This is a story of courage, strength, identity and self worth. A must-read for young women.
