Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kendra D Conzen, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive and detailed overview of perioperative and postoperative health issues in kidney transplant recipients.
Purpose: The purpose is to help healthcare providers in all settings understand health issues unique to kidney transplant recipients and how to best provide quality care for this patient population. The authors successfully accomplish this with a timely and relevant book.
Audience: The audience is all providers of healthcare to kidney transplant recipients, including those in non-transplant settings.
Features: The book provides a comprehensive overview of the pretransplant evaluation process, subtypes of kidney allografts and implications for long-term function, perioperative care, immunosuppression management, and identification and management of postoperative health problems in renal transplant recipients. The chapters that focus on preventive care and management of common problems in recipients are most pertinent. Most of the medication charts are quite helpful. In a text-heavy book, the lack of a bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter is noticeable.
Assessment: This book is unique in its focus on providing an overview of the medical management of kidney transplant recipients that is relevant for healthcare providers not directly involved in the transplant process. There are certainly other books on kidney transplantation, but they tend to target just transplant surgeons or transplant nephrologists.
