"The 42 separately-authored chapters cover a wide range of topics, including history, chronic kidney failure, immunology, surgery, immunosuppression, and long-term complications. The chapters are generally well written and quick reads. Most are exceedingly well referenced. This is a nice, comprehensive book for the not-yet or never-to-be kidney transplant expert who wants to understand kidney transplantation."-Brent W Miller, MD(Washington University School of Medicine) Doody Review: 83/100

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Brent W Miller, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This broad yet fairly comprehensive book on kidney transplantation explores the condition of kidney failure, transplant immunology, transplant surgery, and the medical management of the transplant patient. Last updated in 2008, the book also comes with online access.
Purpose: It is aimed at a diverse group of clinicians involved with kidney transplantation. With the complexity of transplantation, a relatively easy to read resource aimed at slightly less than the transplantation expert is a worthy goal. This book does a good job of meeting this goal. Because this is a rapidly advancing field, some of the information may be out of date in 2 to 3 years. However, much of the background and history will remain timely for a longer period.
Audience: The intended audience is medical professionals who have some knowledge and involvement in managing transplant patients, but may not be transplant experts. General nephrologists, nephrology trainees, surgery trainees, transplant nurses, physician extenders, immunologists, infectious disease clinicians, and anyone else with exposure to transplant patients are among the expected readers. The authors and contributors are well-known experts in the field.
Features: The 42 separately-authored chapters cover a wide range of topics, including history, chronic kidney failure, immunology, surgery, immunosuppression, and long-term complications. The chapters are generally well written and quick reads. Most are exceedingly well referenced. Some, such as the chapters on immunosuppression, occasionally get bogged down in describing the multitude of recent studies rather than draw a conclusion. The advantage of this book is that a practitioner can quickly read a chapter and be reasonably informed on both the history and current practice. Because each chapter is written by a different author, the attention to detail is very nice. However, some more aggressive editing could be helpful. The first successful transplant is described multiple times, for example. With quick online sources of good medical information, the balance of a text conveying immediacy of information versus historical teaching and principles is difficult. This book strikes a fairly nice balance. However, many of the authors have been involved in transplantation for decades. Reviewing some of the historical changes in management, particularly with immunosuppression, would be useful. Dogma in transplant does not wear well.
Assessment: Books on kidney transplantation, as in other specialties, have declined. This is a nice, comprehensive book for the not-yet or never-to-be kidney transplant expert who wants to understand kidney transplantation.
