Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
A good choice for old-fashioned fun.
Children's Literature - Children's Literature
As explained in the brief introduction, this large-format activity book is filled with activities that kids can do with their grandparents, which encourage them to "Have fun with your grandparents and find out lots about yourself and your family at the same time." The activities are divided up into sections--making memories, fun and games, crafts and family food. Although the text is aimed at school-age kids, many of the activities could be adapted for use with younger children as well. The activities seem nicely varied as to amount of physical energy required, ranging from quiet sedentary card games, to more active cooking and travel-related projects. Occasional sidebars offer interesting information on related topics such as terms for relationships and genealogy. An index and many drawings and diagrams are included. 1999, Kids Can Press, Ages 4 up, $17.95 and $10.95. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-A collection of more than 90 games, crafts, recipes, and activities for children to do with their grandparents. The "Making Memories" section is the one that sets the book apart from other activity books. It includes creating a memory book, a family tree, a relative map, and a family crest. Another neat idea is planning a stroll down memory lane to see the sights and neighborhood of a grandparent's youth. If traveling outdoors is out, the author suggests making a photo album, a calendar of family dates (e.g., birthdays, anniversaries, etc.), a cross-stitch embroidery sampler, or profile silhouettes. More common crafts include sachets, drying flowers, or making bird feeders. Directions for games such as yo-yo, jacks, marbles, and tangram pictures are included. A materials list and step-by-step instructions accompany the ideas. The unexciting, monochromatic drawings (in rust or pine green) are clear. A good choice for old-fashioned fun.-Jennifer J.
