The lists of ingredients for recipes in this cookbook for young chefs consist of just three items each. After a brief introduction about cooking and kitchens, the recipes are organized in sections by meal. Gold, a professional chef, created the recipes, which were tested by sous-chefs ages eight to sixteen. Not only are novel recipes introduced, such as pineapple-glazed salmon steaks, but also throughout the cookbook, ideas are given for experimenting with more traditional youth food. There is a page of variations on the basic peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich as well as four things to do with a can of tuna. The layout of the book is fun, colorful, and inviting. The cartoon illustrations by Pinto complement the content by depicting ingredients and other kitchen related items. The recipes are generally simple to follow. In some instances, experience in the kitchen would be helpful in interpreting the steps. This cookbook has basic recipes for those very new to the kitchen, but it also has items that allow budding chefs to create more sophisticated food. The recipes assume a fully stocked kitchen, requiring tools including a food processor. The recipe that this reviewer tried was clear to follow, although the resulting cookies were less than edifying. Several middle school students who examined the book immediately found dishes they were interested in making and were attracted to the simple three-ingredient premise. The book will appeal to young teens with its straightforward style, easy-to-follow recipes, and visually appealing layout.

The author of this lovely cookbook comes from a family that loves to cook. The variety of colored pages and the charming illustrations all make the reader (even a novice cook) feel competent, even eager to cook. Basic categories include "Morning Food," "What to Have for Lunch," "Quick and Healthy Snacks," "Dinner is Fun," "A Rainbow of Vegetables and Side Dishes," and "Delicious Desserts." More than 125 easy recipes are included with the three main ingredients bolded at the beginning of each set of simple-as-1-2-3 directions. This handsomely designed cookbook also includes safety tips, measuring hints, how to follow a recipe, types of cooking equipment, cooking terms, suggested pantry acquisitions, and at the end, an index. The illustrations (and variety of page colors) are a feast for the eyes, with yummy borders and easy-on-the-eyes type. Pages are nicely divided by colored sections, pulling the reader into reading recipes as entertainment, not just directions. The print is a bit small for kids under ten, or oldsters who prefer larger type, but the overall appearance of each page is a delight. Also by the same author are Little Meals: A Great New Way to Eat and Cook and Recipes 1-2-3: Fabulous Food Using Only 3 Ingredients. This very basic cookbook offers 125 recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, healthy snacks, side dishes, and desserts. The recipes are clearly presented, and are broken into easy-to-follow steps. From "Ketchup-Cola Chicken" to "Burger-on-a-Stick," most of the dishes will appeal to children. Cleanliness, food-expiration dates, and personal safety are introduced in "Kitchen Basics." Recipe variations, testimonials by children, and safety tips are scattered throughout. The dishes are indexed by ingredient, type of meal, or title of recipe. The stylized pen-and-ink and watercolor artwork gives the book a slightly sophisticated feel and the lack of photos of the finished dishes limits the appeal for younger children. Nonetheless, this well-organized, clever, and creative guide is perfect for readers who are eager to cook and who want immediate success.

Meet the Author

Rozanne Gold's career was launched at the age of 23 when she became first chef at Gracie Mansion for New York Mayor Ed Koch. Since then, she has been consulting chef for some of New York's most celebrated restaurants and has written nine acclaimed cookbooks, including Little Meals: A Great New Way to Eat & Cook and Recipes 1-2-3: Fabulous Food Using Only 3 Ingredients. Gold, a three-time winner of the James Beard Cookbook Award and winner of the Julia Child/IACP Cookbook Award, appears regularly on national television. She and her husband live in Brooklyn, New York.

Sara Pinto is an award-winning designer and artist. Her first book for Bloomsbury was The Alphabet Room, a Child Magazine Best Book for Children, followed by Clockwise. She lives with her husband and two young sons in Glasgow, Scotland.

    Easy cooking for all ages

    This is the best cook book for kids that we have found.....very simple yet tasty dishes...good food doesn't have to be hard to cook...and this is a fast way to increase confidence in the kitchen.
