From the creators of Animachines, a playful way for kids to learn actions, animals, and opposites.

Opposites are everywhere in our world. A day at the park will reveal busy kids and active animals doing opposite actions. There, on the slide: Sam goes up as Hiroko zips down. And there, in the tree: one squirrel climbs up and another scurries down.

Overview

From the creators of Animachines, a playful way for kids to learn actions, animals, and opposites.

Opposites are everywhere in our world. A day at the park will reveal busy kids and active animals doing opposite actions. There, on the slide: Sam goes up as Hiroko zips down. And there, in the tree: one squirrel climbs up and another scurries down. Not far away, Daddy is quiet but Simon is LOUD, while a mother bird is silent as she feeds her chirping babies.

In Kids Do, Animals Too ten pairs explain opposites to young children. Each pair features people and a different animal, including:

  • fast, slow -- dogs
  • in, out -- mice
  • up, down -- squirrels
  • on, off -- frogs
  • ahead, behind -- ants
  • quiet, loud -- birds
  • under, over --
    spiders
  • wet, dry -- ducks
  • toward, away -- butterflies
  • asleep, awake -- squirrels, bats

The softly colored artwork features familiar park settings, and includes look-and-find details that cleverly connect each active scene. Meanwhile, the aptly crafted language keeps the action moving and the learning fun.

Canadian Materials - Ellen Heaney
The coloured illustrations by Nora Hilb are light and bright, with simple shapes on uncluttered backgrounds. The cast of characters is a multicultural one, and there are lots of interesting small details like bugs and playground signs to be spotted and talked about. This is not an essential purchase, but it would be useful in a preschool or kindergarten classroom, or in a public library's picture book collection. Recommended.
Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
This concept book takes kids to the playground to see how children and animals interact in opposites. The watercolor illustrations portray various children and animals doing many different opposites. Each spread lists the opposites in large letters on the right and left. The smaller text below explains what is going on in the picture—first with the children, second with the animals. Nevertheless, sometimes the words do not exactly match the "opposites" listed. For example, with "ahead" and "behind" it reads, "Max is ahead of Lily. Lily is behind Max. Ants rush by. A big one is ahead. A small ant scampers after it." In regards to the animals, it does not mention the word "behind." This could be confusing for youngsters—especially when the point of the book is to teach those few concept words. This could be a perfect selection for beginning readers, who can just read the concept words and the pictures, or parents who wish to teach common concepts.
