Editorial Reviews

This travel guide for the national parks of California and Oregon is written by two sisters, twelve and fourteen years of age. The writers enthusiastically relate the spirit of appreciation for America's natural resources that they captured on their journeys to these parks. Written in the first person, this guide is packed with suggestions, including hiking trails, swimming holes, caves, and safety in the wilderness. Historical facts and natural history are interwoven in the experiences of this family. Ecological concerns include farming on Point Reyes, acid rain in Crater Lake, and erosion in the Redwoods. There is even a tribute to John Muir and quotes from Walt Whitman and John Steinbeck. The photos are mostly black and white, unfortunately, and do not capture the majesty of the forests, mountains, and seashores. The interviews with the park staff, written in question and answer style, would be more readable if incorporated into the text. Students and families who have visited or will visit these gems will be particularly interested in this book. Libraries might keep it on hand for those patrons planning a trip to one of these areas. Students who are not visiting California or Oregon, however, probably will not be attracted to this book. Index. Photos. Maps. In Kids' Guide To The National Parks Of California And Oregon, 12 year old Jenna Sullivan and her 14 year old sister Laura effectively collaborate to write a thoroughly "kid friendly" guidebook to the spectacular parklands of California and Oregon. These include Redwood National Park; Yosemite National Park; Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks; Pinnacles National Monument; Point Reyes National Seashore; Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lava Beds National Monument; and Crater Lake National Park. These descriptive text covers the geology, vegetation, and wildlife of the parks, along with the young authors' insights into natural resource issues like air pollution, acid rain, fire ecology, wildlife habitat, plant ecology, and resource management. Very highly recommended for any family planning to visit these west coast parklands, Kids' Guide To The National Parks Of California And Oregon is enhanced with an introduction, a conclusion, an index, author bios, and four color plates.
