Overview

Kids Knitting emphasizes fun in every step of the learning process. Sunny paintings by Kristin Nicholas illustrate the individual steps of each technique. Bright boxes of blues, greens, and reds explain everything from button-sewing to tassel-tying. Charming photographs by Chris Hartlove feature finished projects modeled by the creators themselves--all kids who knit.

Best of all, kids get to keep and use whatever they make: bookmarks, backpacks, bracelets, even their own set of customized knitting needles, topped with acorn caps or polka dot balls.

Provides step-by-step instructions covering the basic stitches, knitting tools, and finger-knitting, with directions for twelve easy projects.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Appealing, full-color photographs and a dynamic layout will draw readers to this book, but the careful crafting of instructions will make them successful knitters. Beautiful photos show a group of young people having fun making and wearing attractive hats, socks, and sweaters. Not only are projects and skills arranged in an orderly progression of difficulty, but the directions also begin explicitly and gradually move toward the standard abbreviations used in commercial patterns e.g., "knit 1" is written out instead of abbreviated as "k1". Additional material sets this title above the few others available on the topic. There's good information on proper blocking and laundering of finished garments, dyeing wood with Kool-Aid, making wooden needles, felting wool, sewing knitting bags, the multicultural aspects of knitting, and most importantly finding other knitters to help with the inevitable confusions of acquiring a new skill. By following the clear directions, 10 year olds with a mechanical bent can learn the basics unaided. With some help from an experienced knitter, kids as young as five could have a rewarding new hobby. Only a small flaw mars this exemplary work -- there is a reversed diagram, but an errata sheet correcting this error is available. A terrific resource.

    Must-have!

I recently learned to knit. I wanted to learn to purl and do other stitches as well. I hunted for a helpful book and checked this one out from the library. I was so impressed with it, I bought it! I realized how helpful it would be and wanted to keep it on-hand as a reference. The instructions, diagrams and pictures are straightforward and understandable (because it's written for kids). (If you're new to knitting and you've paged through most 'how-to-knit' books, I'm sure you'll agree that the diagrams can be difficult to comprehend.) After searching for a really good 'learn to knit book', Kids Knitting was the best I found to start with (and I'm an adult)! I read other reviewers' comments on this and agree...this book is a must-have for both children and adults who want to knit! My 6 and 9 year old girls enjoy knitting, too. This little book has given them lots of ideas for easy projects as well as imaginative ways to color their own yarn and customize needles for gifts! I'm glad I found it!

must have for new knitters of all ages

This is one of my favorite tools for teaching kniting. A simple verse in this book aids in remembering the sequence for knitting. I have bought and sold many copies of this book. Janice

ONE OF THE BEST FOR BEGINNERS

I am a completely self-taught knitter thanks to this book. I purchased 'Kids Knitting' when it was first published and all of the recipients of my handknit gifts are surely thankful that I did! I was able to master all the basics of knitting in just a few hours. Of all the knitting books I have purchased, this one has the simplest directions and the most useful pictures. (Most knitting books have 'how-to' pictures that make my head hurt...who draws those things anyway???) I suppose the 'easy-to-follow' nature of the book isn't a suprise, as the book was written for children, but even now, after graduating to more complex patterns, I still re-vist this book frequently. The Magic Spiral Socks pattern is definitely a favorite! Whenever a new knitter asks where I learned to knit I refer them to this book. A must have for any new knitter.
