Editorial Reviews

Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot
This book introduces kids to the basics of crocheting. It presents six original projects suitable for beginners with easy-to-follow instructions. It provides charts and templates, and tells you what to do when things go wrong.
Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Peg and Pip, two cute, cartoon mice, demonstrate the steps of learning to crochet. They start with the most basic explanations and appear in the clear photographs illustrating each component of getting started and proceeding to a finished project. Along the way, Peg and Pip give tips and pointers in sidebars and insets. As with many handwork crafts, it is easier to show a person face to face how to knit, crochet, tat, spin, weave, and so forth, but a novice could easily learn to crochet from this guidebook and graduate to more complicated stitches and patterns. The combination of actual photos of hooks and yarn with the clever little mice pointing to the various specifics makes the book appealing as well as instructive. The diagrams with drawings of a person's hands showing the proper use of hook and yarn are easy to follow, and the drawn in arrows make it clear how the hook and yarn should move. Pip's tip about counting stitches and writing down the number is great advice for a beginner. It is often hard to go back to count, so doing it as you proceed is a boon. Math teachers will appreciate the use of a chart to track stitches and work in patterns. There are even circular charts for flower patterns and other round projects. The projects are simple and fun to complete; they include several "animal" characters (Stripy Stu, Beaky George, and Sweet Mousie) as well as several "bag" purses, and a quick way to make a "fabulous flower." One of the best aspects of the instruction guide is the inclusion of the "when things go wrong" section. Troubleshooting is very important, and Peg and Pip explain how to fix several typical beginner crocheting problems. This will be a great addition to the"crafts" shelf. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan

Gr 2-4

Softly hued, whimsical color illustrations are superimposed on sharp, vivid color photos in this eye-catching introduction. In step-by-step fashion, children will learn how (with adult guidance) to crochet a pen or pencil topper, cute critters, flowers, a bag, and more. Adorable mice guide children throughout with their "Pip Says" and "Peg Says" tips. Activities include stitching seams, following a pattern/chart, crocheting with stripes, decreasing/increasing, double crochet, crocheting in circles, and fixing mistakes. Each project includes a list of materials, a chart (which the book claims is the easiest type of crochet pattern), and a color photograph of the finished product. Back matter includes templates for cutting the felt pieces that some projects require and information on yarn and one supplier. A solid addition to craft collections.-Augusta R. Malvagno, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
