Riders like us!

A rainy day isn't going to dampen the spirits of these preschoolers. As they empty their toy box, they become bus drivers and firefighters, dinosaurs and hungry bears. Every item they find is inspiration for a new activity. And each spread features a new color of the rainbow—like the one that curves outside the window when the sun comes out at the end of their fun-filled day.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

An energetic opening "Fwoom"-depicting the sound of a yellow school bus pulling away-invites readers to join in the dramatic play of a multiracial group of children. Well-suited for its age group with its bursts of enthusiastic language and appropriately colored fonts (e.g., "red" is set in red), the book captures the exuberant yet serious spirit of small children absorbed in play. A blond boy pushes a toy fire truck along the floor while an African-American boy answers what is obviously an emergency call; on the next spread all the children are fully engaged in putting out the fire. The minimal text, dotted with exclamation points and question marks, focuses on sounds, colors and a recurring response that defines the game at hand: "EEeeOOoo. When the red fire truck zooms by, who helps put out the hot orange blaze? Firefighters like us!" Other sequences involve circuses, castles and more. Morgan (previously paired with Schaefer for The Squiggle) supplies fluidly drawn illustrations on brown-paper-bag-like backgrounds, which create a strong sense of collective make-believe. Ages 3-5. PreS-Gr 2- This offering takes readers back to the ethnically diverse, cooperative, child-led classroom depicted in Dragon Dancing (Viking, 2007). On a "gray drizzle day," indoor doings depend on the power of imagination. With themes for free play suggested by the real-life action outside the classroom's plate glass window, simple playthings-blocks, toys, dress-up bits-offer plenty of inspiration for open-ended activities, enhancing games the children make up themselves and encouraging invention and exploratory thinking. Chairs become seats on the yellow school bus, and kids become firefighters, clowns, dinosaurs, showmen, royalty, and even a family of bears. Schaefer's text offers invitations for readers/listeners to interact by supplying sound effects, identifying words for colors printed in appropriate hues, and guessing the roles kids will play when the page turns ("Riders....Firefighters....Dinos like us!"), while Morgan employs a calligrapher's touch to superimpose colorful fantasy-play figments of the kids' imaginations on their more commonplace classroom components. Who should buy this book? Teachers and librarians like us!-Kathy Krasniewicz, Perrot Library, Old Greenwich, CT

Kirkus Reviews
As the yellow bus pulls away into the drizzle, it leaves behind a cluster of energetic youngsters at preschool, ready for a day of playacting. The mastery of this book lies in the portrayal of the world through the children's creative perspective. By overlaying each illustration of the kids' actual activities with slightly transparent gouache, Morgan beautifully brings to life what they're all imagining. As the fire engine goes by, readers see "Firefighters like us!" with squirting hoses and cherry-red helmets. As they rummage through the costume trunk and pull back the purple curtain to put on a show, readers see "Clowns like us!" as they "Yee-ha!" and "Wa-hoo!" into circus antics. When they venture into the jungle, readers see "Dinosaurs like us!" as ordinary dinosaur toys transform the children into T. rex and Apatosaurus. Each page rings with such wonderfully onomatopoeic sounds as "Wuffle," "Scritchy-scratch" and "Ring-a-ding!" The names of colors appear in appropriately hued inks, providing an extra learning experience. A sure-fire impetus for rousing make-believe play! (Picture book. 3-6)
