Before you go to Italy !

I found a great resource for those of you who want to teach your kids common Italian phrases before you make the move to Italy, or because you've just arrived. It's called Kids Stuff Italian, Easy Italian Phrases for You and Your Kids by Therese Pirz. (They also have for French, German and Spanish.) I like it because they have easy phrases for infants, divided by age (2 mos-12 mos) such as 'What do you have in your mouth?, Where is the rattle?, Daddy will put on your pajamas'. Then for the older kids, the phrases are divided by topic (Getting Dressed, Helping at Home, Playing, Greetings, Alphabet, Weather, Bedtime, etc. etc.). Over 1,000 sentences. The last part of the book has bilingual vocabulary lists (tools, vegetables, occupations, insects, flowers, toys, family, etc.). It has 150 pages (approx 5' x 8'). I like it.

    Not Just for Older Children

Kid Stuff Italian is for my little one (1 yr old) and me. We love to 'talk' to each other. At this age, she listens, and I do all the talking! This book is very useful, especially for busy people like me. The phrases are short and practical, easy to remember and not overwhelming with complicated grammar. That's the kind of book for me!

A Book for Mom and Baby

Kids Stuff Italian is a wonderful resource for parents who are learning Italian and want their children to learn the language as well. It's rather like a Cliff's Notes of the Italian language for anyone who wants to speak the language with young children, with chapters providing appropriate language, vocabulary, and conversational phrases for newborns, infants, toddlers and older. Kids Stuff Italian addresses almost any situation or circumstance that involves children: the playground, the beach, the weather, behavior, days of the week, months of the year, various play activities, colors, seasons, mealtimes, bath time, bedtime, and much, much more. I've found it an invaluable tool to use with my daughter, now age three. I've used this book as a cornerstone of our goal of bilingualism since she was a baby, and it's helping us both: she's learning basic Italian that applies to her world, and I'm able to stay a few steps ahead of her while I continue my Italian studies with classes and textbooks, none of which concentrate solely on vocabulary and topics that apply to young children the way that Kids Stuff Italian does so well.
