Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is a compilation of comments from kids in response to questions about the president. Although entertaining, this book does not provide much factual information for students. In a classroom it could be used as a springboard for an inquiry project about the president of the United States. Many of the responses may give parents and teachers an insight into children's understandings about the president and their familiarity with stories about past presidents. Kids are asked questions such as: What does the president do, what does the president eat, where does the president live, what does the president wear, does the president have a family, and what kind of rules does the president make. To which kids have entertaining replies such as: "sometimes he sleeps at work," "He holds the American flag while they're fighting in the war," "The President eats Fruit Loops for breakfast," "He wears nice underwear. With pictures of his kids," "They wear wigs because they're bald," "His family is all the other presidents," "On his days off he sometimes goes to Canada," and "The President had to borrow some of my mom and dad's money to get some of that stuff." Visually appealing, some of the comments are presented in dialogue bubbles while others are written on pages that resemble handwriting practice paper. Mostly for enjoyment, this book might provide more amusement for parents and teachers then it would for young children. 2004, Warren Hansen Organization, Ages 7 to 10.
