Overview

This is the first practical guide for the families of children and teenagers with celiac disease, a chronic, life-long digestive disorder. As many as one out of 150 to 250 Americans is born with this genetic autoimmune condition, which is characterized by intolerance of gluten--a substance in wheat, oats, barley, malt, and other food additives--and often goes undiagnosed. In a supportive conversational style, Danna Korn shows that it's possible for kids with celiac disease and their families to lead happy and healthy lives.

Parents find advice on how to deal with the diagnosis, cope with the emotional turmoil, and help their child develop a positive and constructive attitude. Especially important is the guidance on menu planning, grocery shopping, strategies for proper food preparation, and deciding whether or not the entire family should be gluten-free. There's even a section on junk food!

What about the child who has difficulty sticking with the prescribed diet? Parents find tips on conditioning behavior and how and when to give kids some control over what they eat. Also covered is the challenge of controlling meals outside of the home--at birthday parties, restaurants, camp, and on vacation. There's also information about how federal regulations and tax laws apply to children with celiac disease.

As the only comprehensive book of its kind, Kids with Celiac Disease will be the bible for the thousands of families coping with this condition. Physicians and nutritionists too, will want to refer new families to this complete resource.

Editorial Reviews

Danna Korn's Kids With Celiac Disease: A Family Guide To Raising Happy, Healthy, Gluten-Free Children is an ideal, "parent friendly", and practical guide for families with children and teens afflicted with celiac disease, a genetic autoimmune condition which causes symptoms of chronic diarrhea, irritable-bowel distress, anemia, and bloating. Such children must have a gluten free diet. Kids With Celiac Disease will also help families cope with post-diagnosis transitions and show how lifestyle changes can lead to happy and healthy lives for such children and their families. Of special value is the guidance concerning menu planning, grocery shopping, food preparation strategies, and whether or not it is necessary for the entire family to have a gluten-free diet. There's even a section on junk food! If you have a child with celiac disease, you need to sit down and read Danna Korn's Kids With Celiac Disease from first page to last. The result will be a much happier and healthier kid, — with a mom or dad relieved of the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty of not knowing how to effectively parent such a child.

A must-read for anyone who wishes to be supportive of families dealing with Celiac Disease

As a grandparent of a newly-diagnosed Celiac toddler, I found this book invaluable. If one has any inclination at all of minimizing the seriousness or ramifications of Celiac Disease, this will enlighten that person. Hidden sources of gluten, unintentional cross-contamination of other food products, the added burden of grocery-shopping for gluten-free products, near impossibility of finding gluten-free food at restaurants, difficulty in educating family and friends as to the importance of being diligent in guarding against exposing your child to gluten, and more - this book contains it all. However, it does not merely dwell on the difficulties of raising a Celiac child. It is also full of ideas to help make the lives of the Celiac child and his parents more normal, healthy and manageable. It is good to reread parts of the book periodically, to remind oneself of the issues faced by families affected by this disease.

A must have guide for every celiac family

As the mother of a 6 1/2 year old boy who was diagnosed with celiac disease at age 3, I can honestly say that this book covers everything a family should know about raising a gluten free child. I laughed at many of the anecdotes because I have been there...I know the look on the face of the server when I order a burger, without the bun. I held back tears at many passages because I have been there...I know the feeling of loss that comes immediately after the diagnosis. I wondered if my child would still be able to lead a 'normal' life when faced with birthday cupcakes and post-game pizza parties. This book ought to be in every single pediatric GI doctor's office and be handed to every single family that walks out of that office with the news that the child has celiac disease.
