Overview

Jan Venolia is as concerned as ever about how we express ourselves in our writing. Turning her attention to young writers, she penned this handy guide to all the rules and tools kids need to choose the right word, craft the perfect sentence, develop a winning style, and even outline a paper. Funny cartoons will make the topic go down easy with kids and make this a great parent or teacher resource, too.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Conversational narrative, liberally enhanced with example and exceptions to the rules, marks this introduction to the mysteries of grammar, punctuation, organization, spelling, and style. Young writers can look up parts of speech, and puzzle over when to use and not use a comma, and whether and when its needs an apostrophe. And although I'd hesitate to recommend the organization chapter to young fiction writers (it tends to follow a startplanwrite model), I have to admit that, alas, I know some adults who could use such a guide. The text is illustrated with blackandwhite, cartoonstyle drawings. Glossary included. 2000, Tricycle Press, Ages 11 to 13, $9.95. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami

Gr 6-8-A clear look at grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style for students and budding authors. Bold headings, varied type fonts, background shading, and cartoon drawings enliven the presentation, which covers the basics as well as some of the stickier problems readers will encounter when writing. The author's colloquial style and numerous examples make the book reader-friendly. The section on organizing a composition or paper will simplify the process for children who have a hard time putting their thoughts on paper. Amusing pencil drawings of a wide spectrum of monsters, animals, and children illustrate the book.-Shanla Brookshire, Lovett Memorial Library, Pampa, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
