Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
The Lotus Lane Girls Club (aka LLGC) is a suburban girl's dream. The three BFF's in this club live on the same street and attend the same school. Each member of this internationally flavored group has a distinct personality and interest: Coco, whose parents come from Italy, cooks & bakes; detail oriented Lulu, whose dad is French, is the group's planner and hair stylist; and Kiki, the author of this diary, is the self-appointed fashion queen. But then Mika from Japan moves next door and displays her own fashion skills. Is there room in the LLGC for two fashionistas? When a communication breakdown between Mika and Kiki complicates the already tense situation, girl problems are inevitable. May has given the popular diary format a decidedly girlish twist in this new series. Full of ultra feminine doodles—think flowers, cute animals, and lots of fashion designs—as well as cell phone texts, and fact boxes, the format works well for young readers' first ventures into chapter books. The thin plot and rather flat characters give this a Saturday morning cartoon feel, but will be sure to find a ready audience in girls with a flair for fashion. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Kirkus Reviews
"I am Kiki, World-Famous Style Star!" Meet Kiki, budding fashionista, expert shopper, enthusiastic dog lover, devoted chicken caregiver and excellent friend. Since her mom is going away for a week for her work as a fashion stylist, Kiki is keeping a journal to apprise her of everything that goes on, particularly the adventures of the Lotus Lane Girls Club (Kiki and her friends Lulu and Coco). In an accessible diary format that includes texts, drawings of Kiki's various outfits and side commentary, Kiki relates--in preteenspeak --some of the highs (pajama parties, cupcake baking, outfit planning) and lows (stressing over a school project, failing to befriend new classmate Mika) of being an elementary school girl. When it turns out that both Kiki and Mika have chosen to create fashions for the school art fair, the competition gets a little fierce; add to it various misunderstandings and a missing dog, and a huge mess ensues. What's a girl to do? While admittedly very light fare with a thin plot, minimal character development and an excess of exclamation points, girly girls and fans of May's earlier books will eat this up. Though part of the publisher's new Branches series of chapter books, the busy format may initially stump children just graduating from early readers. A good choice for girls who love sparkles. Their minds go wild sometimes, but their crazy thoughts inspired them and me!! Even though they do not get all they want, they still dream on and so will I. They are just little girls but they have BIG hearts. They are the best of friends!! I loved the book! It was awesome!!!!!

Kiki wants to be a fashion designer. She has a couple of friends when a new girl moves in on their street. The new girl doesn't fit in well with Kiki and her friends. I have to admit that at first I was really disappointed with the story. While the diary format and illustration loaded pages give life and personality to the book, I felt like it wasn't very original. Isn't there something else that little girls dream about becoming other than a fashion designer? There are so many interesting professions out there, why do all these protagonists want to be in fashion? I also thought that much of the content was meant for older kids, even though it came packaged for younger readers. That being said, I did like the way the story ended. I liked that Kiki and Mika worked out their differences and cleared up their misunderstandings in a a nice way. I think young girls would find the book entertaining.

On behalf of my 5-year-old, these books are great!! She is an independent reader just getting into chapter books, but still just 5 years old so having lots of pictures and high interest is very important.

My little girl (age 8) read this book over Christmas and is now waiting to get the next one. Similar type of writing as wimpy kid.

Lotus Lane #1: Kiki: My Stylish Life by Kyla May My rating: 3 of 5 stars Lotus Lane Book 1 - Kiki is about a young girl named Kiki and her BFFL's (BFFL=Best Friends For Life) Coco and Lulu. They all live on Lotus Lane and are members of the LLGC (LLGC=Lotus Lane Girl Club). In this book we are reading Kiki's diary which is a very cute, sassy diary, full of pretty little pictures and doodles. The tale is of three best friends, a new girl, a misinterpretation of events and the eventual understanding and friendship that results. My four year old lost interest somewhere in the middle of the story (14 small chapters), but we did read it in one sitting and she came back to it towards the end. We had fun identifying the days of the week and some of the smaller sight words she knows. Overall a cute book for kids. Would be better read to your child a few chapters at a time.
