Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``I like her,'' proclaims Kiki, a comically bug-eyed little dinosaur, shortly after her baby sister comes home from the hospital. But as the infant becomes more wakeful and screams day and night, Kiki has second thoughts about this addition to the family. Early one morning, perched on the colorful quilt covering her sleeping parents, Kiki announces--with endearing candor--that she wants to know ``if we are keeping this baby forever. Maybe we should bring her back to the hospital.'' Kiki's understanding father and mother tell her they can all decide what to do--after she gets to know her sister a bit better. Though the ending here is somewhat predictable, it just may help youngsters look more forgivingly at their new siblings. Featuring toy-cluttered floors and ever-changing expressions on the faces of this congenial dino family, the pictures in Barrett's first children's book are a breath of fresh air. Ages 4-8. (Mar.)

PreS-Gr 1-- Kiki likes her new baby sister, at first. Of course, it is only a matter of time before the little one rules the household--crying and chewing on her sister's toys. Kiki's growing consternation is obvious in the humorous illustrations, but goes unnoticed by her parents. She develops a carefully planned case for sending the baby back, but her mother and father never have time to hear her out. Kiki finally does get her point across, and they wisely include her in more of the infant's care. She then decides that ``for now we should keep her . . . ,'' a sentiment her parents echo as they tuck Kiki into bed. Preschoolers will find the small format appealing, not to mention that the characters are dinosaurs! The colorful cartoons are amusing, with enough clever detail to enhance the story. Used with Kevin Henkes's more sophisticated Julius, the Baby of the World (Greenwillow, 1990), this selection will help ease young children's anxieties over the intrusion of a new baby. --Lisa S.
