All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The true birth of thrash. On Kill 'Em All, Metallica fuses the intricate riffing of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Diamond Head with the velocity of Motörhead and hardcore punk. James Hetfield's highly technical rhythm guitar style drives most of the album, setting new standards of power, precision, and stamina. But really, the rest of the band is just as dexterous, playing with tightly controlled fury even at the most ridiculously fast tempos. There are already several extended, multi-sectioned compositions foreshadowing the band's later progressive epics, though these are driven by adrenaline, not texture. A few tributes to heavy ...

A few tributes to heavy metal itself are a bit dated lyrically; like Diamond Head, the band's biggest influence, Kill 'Em All's most effective tone is one of supernatural malevolence -- as pure sound, the record is already straight from the pits of hell. Ex-member Dave Mustaine co-wrote four of the original ten tracks, but the material all sounds of a piece. And actually, anyone who worked backward through the band's catalog might not fully appreciate the impact of Kill 'Em All when it first appeared -- unlike later releases, there simply isn't much musical variation apart from a lyrical bass solo from Cliff Burton. The band's musical ambition also grew rapidly, so today, Kill 'Em All sounds more like the foundation for greater things to come. But that doesn't take anything away from how fresh it sounded upon first release, and time hasn't dulled the giddy rush of excitement in these performances. Frightening, awe-inspiring, and absolutely relentless, Kill 'Em All is pure destructive power, executed with jaw-dropping levels of scientific precision.

    Thrash metal perfection

Released in 1983, Metallica's debut combines some of the best traits of their influences into one essential album. Taking the ferocity, speed, and attitude of Venom, Motorhead, and hardcore punk, and blending it with the riffage and epic songwriting methods of Diamond Head and Mercyful Fate, Metallica were able to take so much from other bands and still maintain such high-profile originality, not to mention an advancement in the performance of their music, with an emphasis on heavily palm-muted guitar motifs that were unrivaled in their time in terms of overall tightness.

    The power of Metallica!

I've always been partial to the Metallica debut "Kill 'Em All". I love it's rawness and also at the same time how it was able to capture the power and speed that created this great reputation that the great Four Horseman have to this date. With songs such as "Four Horseman" "Motorbreath" "Seek & Destroy" and "Metal Militia" this album was already destined to be a classic when the band jumped in the studio to record it. Another thing this album brings to the table is Cliff Burton showing his awesome lethality on the bass, "Pulling Teeth (Anethesia)" is the bass solo that gave Cliff his repution as the best bassist ever to hit the metal scene. It is at the top of my most listened to cd's. A must for an avid Metallica fan.

    Kill 'Em All

This album sparked the birth of thrash metal, and it is AWESOME. Metallica created a whole new genre that still somewhat exists today in the likes of groups like Shadows Fall. If it weren't for this album, many of the metal bands today wouldn't even be thought of. My favorite track is "Motorbreath," although "The Four Horsemen" is very good too. This album is highly praised.

    Real Metal

Metallica's first one is very aggressive, so I guess this isn't for children. Lyrics are very good except from "Seek And Destroy". I can't understand why people like it. Well, goo work! There are many riffs in this album.

    The Begining

I Finally found the original 12 track album on CD (After a couple of months of lookin') An' it's one of the best of Metallica, the 10 track disc is the next best thing!

    Good heavy thrash

A sort of primitive wail of riffing and speed which heralded Metallica's entry into the world. Kill 'Em All lacks, to an extent, the developed and varied sound of their next few albums. But it does feature very tight and fast rhythms, an aggressive stance and overall a nice, crunchy sound - just what one wants from a metal record. Ironically, this album is far superior to the Load/ReLoad garbage that is being pushed so hard today.

    Good ole 'tallica

some might only know the newer, radio friendly metallica. you know, stuff from load and reload and even metallica, but before that change, metallica really rocked. guitars were just as important, maybe more, as vocals. this album does not sound like a first at all. basically the whole album kicks a**. horsemen has a sweet chorus, motorbreath gets you going, jump in the fire makes you want to do just that. the opening riffs of seek and destroy always make me wanna get up and scream. this album is the basis for metallica's rise to the throne. if you love metallica and don't have this, you're missing out.
