Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
What's black and white but not a whale? Orcas, or killer whales, which are technically in the dolphin family. These fiercely predatory marine mammals live in the world's oceans but prefer the frigid water of the Arctic and Antarctic Seas. They are easy to spot, since their dorsal fins can be up to six feet tall on males, and an adult orca can grow to be as big as an elephant. This book, part of the "Whales and Dolphins Up Close" series, is full of color photos, easily understandable text plus intriguing information that should appeal to young readers. For instance, killer whales communicate with one another, as many dolphins and whales do, but orcas hear not only with their ears, but with their lower jaw. Their lower jaws serve as antennas, which carry sound to their ears and brains. Other features of this book and series are life cycle charts, brief side bars, glossary, index, a list of "amazing but true" facts, safe internet sites and a book list to "read more."
