    Poppet's review of Killerbyte

It's not often I get the opportunity to review a book of this calibre (every pun intended). I've read reviews of Killerbyte & in my opinion, none of them do this novel justice.

Killerbyte transcends every other book in this genre I've ever read (and I spent my teenage years living on them), I am not exaggerating when I say that Killerbyte is quite simply THE BEST thriller I have ever read.

Starting with the basics, Killerbyte is written in a non-stop car chase pace. It's one impact scene after another, dragging the reader deeper and deeper into the carnage and chaos of a serial killer with a lot to prove and one person to victimise. The writing pace is breathless, it's succinct, professional and utterly convincing, transporting the reader into the life of FBI agent Gabrielle Conway. The jargon and procedure is flawless, you are there, you're living the life of an FBI agent caught in a killer's path from page one.

The book opens with the main character's attitude and dumps you straight into the beginning of her life on the skids to hell. One man is creating her hell, and Connor manages to lead you down the garden path with so many suspects that you begin to feel sure you know *who dunnit* - only to have evidence and suspicion keep coming to light to change your opinion.

One thing keeps this book firmly grounded and tangible to the average reader, Ellie (Gabrielle) and her friend Mac. They are real, and the added thread of their relationship inside this dynamic keeps a smile plastered on the reader's face just as fast as the blood, gore and ungodly surprises wipe it off again. Connor has managed the impossible, she's given you characters to fall in love with, while keeping your stomach firmly tied in a knot of tension and disgust.

The crime scenes are excruciatingly detailed, to turn the most iron constitution inside out. And unlike other books where the hero never seems to be in the firing line and get hurt, the main character in this book gets knocked down so many times that you want to protect her yourself.

This novel is a nail-biter from beginning to end. It's so realistic that it feels tangible. The plot surrounds poetry, and common ground that every person living in the 21st century shares - an ISP address, a computer, and a chatroom. Every review I've read focuses on this intently, yet I feel that those reviews detract from the brilliance of the plot which is SO much more than a chatroom and poetry. The characters are so much more than a badge and a gun.

Cat Connor has fully rounded characters, dealing with the worst blows life can handle anyone, caught up in an investigation targeted at an FBI agent, the supporting characters are just as real, and she threads humour into the worst scenarios, making her characters likeable in every way. They are vulnerable and human, and they need to catch a killer before he finds them. The mystery, the technology, it's so tightly interwoven that they are married in this novel like two branches on the same tree.

Cat's book Killerbyte is a testament to technology, and how much it can be used to both perpetrate crime, and solve it.

Killerbyte - it's got lots of killing & one intense bite! It's better than any adrenaline kicker you've ever experienced. Nothing else compares. I promise you, it won't disappoint if you like tension, suspense, action, mystery and impossible pace that leaves you breathless.
