Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Gerard (Last Man Standing) works her successful formula of sexy special ops heroes and romantic suspense in this middling stand-alone. CIA attorney Eva Salinas needs to know what happened on the botched black ops mission in Afghanistan that killed her husband. Only ex-operative Mike Brown has the answers. Baffling the reader, Eva tracks Mike to a foreign country, lures him to a hotel room, drugs him, ties him up, and questions him at gunpoint. Considering his abduction and Eva’s story of a mysterious flash drive of classified files, Mike thinks Eva is nuts—until someone tries to kill them both. Danger-fueled romantic tension heats up as an investigation leads them to a sprawling international conspiracy linking American survivalist militias, Mexican cartels, and the Taliban. Sizzling chemistry will allow readers to forgive some rather contrived plot developments. (Feb.)
From the Publisher
"Romantic suspense favorite Gerard is known for her fast-paced, special-ops–based books, and this is the first in her new One-Eyed Jacks series. From the intensely captivating opening scene to the last tender moment, Gerard takes the reader on an emotionally complex yet action-packed roller-coaster ride of romance and conflict, capitalizing on both sexual and situational tension. Mike and Eva leap off the page as smart, resourceful yet damaged characters who find solace and sanctuary in each other and their shared journey toward truth and redemption. Gerard hits the mark with this addition to her unique and successful brand of special-ops romantic suspense."
Kirkus Reviews
Eight years ago, Mike Brown was railroaded into taking the blame for a military operation in Afghanistan gone horribly awry, and he's spent every day since then trying to forget. CIA attorney Eva Salinas suspects both foul play and Mike Brown; she's determined to get some answers, though she may get them both killed trying. When a mysterious file shows up on Eva Salinas' desk with information that directly contradicts the official report of her husband's death, it leads her to more and more questions and finally to Mike Brown, one of only three survivors of the fatal engagement and the one on whom the whole disaster was pinned. She doesn't trust the guy, but she's pretty sure his story is closer to the truth than the military version. All she wanted was a few answers, but what she gets are an attempt on her life and the realization that some very important people want her--and Mike Brown--dead. Thankfully, Brown has some valuable connections (tie-ins from Gerard's Bodyguards and Black Ops Inc. series), since by unearthing dangerous secrets, Mike and Eva are sudden targets of a powerful villain who'd like to keep his past and present crimes deeply buried. Bringing the traitor to ground will take Eva and Mike from Lima, Peru, to Washington, D.C., to a remote paramilitary compound in Idaho, and it will force each of them to face some difficult truths and confront an unwelcome sizzling attraction. ~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

Gerard not only took me on a wild ride of my life, but she also introduced me to my future book boyfriends, made me laugh and suck in shocked gasps, and of course, made me fall in love. ~ Under the Covers

Cindy Gerard is a premier author of this genre. Each book she writes is better than the last. I shall try to refrain from fangirling so much but I only have so much restraint. KILLING TIME exceeded my expectations (and they were quite high). Mike “Primetime” Brown was introduced in the BOI series and made a definite impression, making me very eager to read this new series, the One-Eyed Jacks. Gerard’ s setup for this series is spectacularly planned. Even as she is weaving together a romance between Eva and Mike and riddling readers with action-packed scenes, she is still building towards the greater goal of introducing the One-Eyed Jacks as individuals and not just as a team.

Gerard starts KILLING TIME with an explosive start. The first chapter infuses sexual tension (and frustration) with exotic locales and a little spark of forbidden danger. It works so well in capturing reader’s attention that they are helpless but to dive right in.

Eve Salinas is a CIA attorney with the intent of exacting revenge. Eight years ago, her husband Ramon was killed in the same event that caused Mike to lose his team. As Eva corners Mike, a not-so-simple back-and-forth ensues. What I love about Gerard and her writing is that she is so good at writing male POVs. She has the unique talent that I don’t think a lot of female writers have of getting inside a male character’s head and simply letting those unfiltered thoughts through. I love that she lets the sarcastic humor rip through the pages. In dire times, it definitely lightens the mood and keeps readers invested in the characters as well.

The one thing I should note is that while I liked Eva, I wasn’t completely enthralled by her either. I enjoyed seeing her strength and determination, but I don’t think she is my favorite heroine that Gerard has introduced us too. That honor still goes to Jenna.

Speaking of Jenna…Gabe Jones has some great page time in this book and I simply fell in love with him all over again. SHOW NO MERCY is my favorite book by Gerard and revisiting the Archangel was great for me as a reader. I love how Gerard was so readily able to go back to the BOI and not have it feel forced. Together, the guys really make for a great time.

Then there is Cooper and Taggart who made a good impression on me. Gerard creates this brotherhood between the guys so well that even though there’s bad blood between them, you know that they have each other’s backs no matter what. It melts my little heart when I see loyalty like that in anything.

In this opening installment to the One-Eyed-Jacks, Gerard not only took me on a wild ride of my life, but she also introduced me to my future book boyfriends, made me laugh and suck in shocked gasps, and of course, made me fall in love.

    4.5-5 stars
What a great start to a new series!  We've met Mike "Prime-time" in the Black Ops series.  He's got a great personality.  We meet Eva because her late husband was on Mike's One-Eyed Jacks team.  On a  mission eight years ago, things go horribly bad.  She's on the hunt for answers, and believes that Mike will have them.  They end up working together to try and figure what went wrong on the mission that took the lives of so many innocents, and Mike's team.  Great story, great intro to the new characters, and absolutely loved the ending.  I love Cindy's writing style...I laugh, cry, and am intrigued throughout the story.  Cannot wait for Taggert and Copper's book.  AND..bringing some of the Black Op guys/gals back!

So, I just fan girled out. I loved this novel. Mike and Eva were amazing. I loved how Eva was not a helpless woman but a kick ass woman who constantly pulled her weight.  I love Cindy Gerard's characters. Her books always bring a smile to my face and usually I end up with a tear in my eye by the end. I loved the introduction into this new series. I am glad that Gabe had a prominent role in this novel. It mad me Eeek in excitement. This book definitely gave me my BOI fix. I will definitely read this series

Gerrard's lucky streak with military heroes and strong, compelli

Gerrard's lucky streak with military heroes and strong, compelling plots continues!

A sizzling, sexy, heart-thumping, action-packed, knuckle-biting story from one of the best writers of romantic suspense. As a fan of her other series with the same attributes, Bodyguards and Black Ops Inc., this first book in her new series is everything I expected it would be, and maybe a little more. Cindy Gerard delivers sexy hot heroes who deal with danger easily and efficiently, and heroines who are their equal in many ways, and bring about a sense of calm in the chaos. It’s hard not to fall in love with her characters because they’re perfect as much as they are flawed. We cheer for them, we cry for them, and for a short period of time, they’re all ours to enjoy.

You don’t have to have read the other series in order to jump into this book and understand who is who or what they do, but it might help. Familiar names and faces from her Bodyguards series and the Black Ops Inc. series pop up – to my utter delight, Gabe makes quite a few appearances in this book. If you don’t know who Gabe is, Gabriel ‘Archangel’ Jones, read his story in Show No Mercy (Black Ops Inc. #1).

The blurb sums up the book perfectly, so I’ll just dive into my review. This book started of really strong and just kept going, and going, and going. I absolutely love strong heroines who have a bit of Lara Croft in them – I mean the kicking butt and handling guns like a pro. If that isn’t enough to turn on a Spec Ops soldier then what is?

Even though Mike and Eva get off to a rather rough start, their chemistry is undeniable and a constant source of hot looks and quite a few hilarious dialogs. Mike is cheeky, cocky, and a smarta$$, and I loved him for it. But Eva can give it back just as good, and she does. Quite often. There were so many great moments of comedic relief during tense moments. I guess they even rubbed off on Gabe, or marriage has mellowed him out because even got in on it at least once. My point is, you feel like you’re there and a part of the moment.

Where this story really shines is the plot. What starts out as a mission to unearth the truth of what really happened in Afghanistan all those years ago, and clear Mike’s name; it turns out there is so much more at stake – together they infiltrate a terrorist camp disguised as a cult, Eva learns a painful truth, Mike learns an awful betrayal, but gains the trust back of two brothers in arms, and somewhere along the way, Eva and Mike both discover love and trust. I couldn’t put this book down once I got started. If this is any indication of how the rest of the series will go, I will undoubtedly be devouring every single one of them. This series is not to be missed if you love military heroes and strong, compelling plots. I most definitely and highly recommend this book, or any book penned by the brilliant Cindy Gerard.

While I like Cindy Gerard as an author and have enjoyed more than a dozen of her books, I had a few issues with the plot of this one. The opening chapter was over the top and not really consistent with Eva character as an attorney even if she did work for the CIA.. Some details were a bit farfetched. Overall it was a decent read.

    Wow

    ## WOW. Another astounding read by Cindy Gerard. I don't know how she does it. What I do know is that she is freaking brilliant. This book was amazing. The hero and heroine had tremendous chemistry and the story had plenty of intrigue. I have read all the Bodyguard books, then the BOI books in order which ultimately lead into this new series. So I understood all the background info and connections. That would be my recommendation. It is so worth it. I can't wait for her next book. Note to author: more please!!

Mike Brown was discharged from the military after an operation called “Slam Dunk” goes horribly wrong. He has been living with the shame by soaking his sorrows in alcohol. But this all changes the moment he is drugged and held hostage by a striking woman.

Eva Salinas lost her husband in a military mission 8 years ago. This failed mission was blamed on Mike Brown. A mysterious file containing mission discrepancies suddenly appears in Eva's possession. Determined to get to the bottom of the disgrace of her husband and his team, Eva takes off for South America to get the truth from Mike Brown by whatever means necessary.

They soon discover that they not only have opened up a hornets nest with there interaction...but there are some very determined people who are willing to go to great lengths to keep what truly happened in Afghanistan gone forever. Running for their lives and trying to clear the teams reputation puts Mike and Eva in a reluctant truce. The truce seems to develop into instant and explosive chemistry.

I loved Killing Time. The character's plight was heart felt and the Cindy Gerard did an incredible job pulling you right into their story. The tension was nail biting the romantic sizzling! Killing Time is a fantastic special ops, romance, action novel. 5 Stars.
