In 1985, with much fanfare, a time capsule was buried under the front lawn of a small-town county courthouse, to be reopened in 2085. But just twenty years later, in the dead of night, the capsule is dug up, its contents stolen. That same night, one of the contributors to the capsule is brutally slain in his home - with no sign of forced entry or indication of a struggle. One by one, others who had placed items in the time capsule are murdered.
Besides his suspicions about the sudden, mysterious appearance of Nikita Stover, the chief investigator, Knox Davis, has absolutely no leads. We leave at daylight, so I must write quickly. All reports indicate that my pursuers are now very close: the same scouts who for the last two days have reported seeing a phantom airship moving steadily down from the northeast, setting fire to the earth as it goes, now say that they have spotted the vessel near Lake Albert. My host, Chief Dugumbe, has at last given up his insistence that I allow his warriors to help me stand and fight, and instead offers an escort of fifty men to cover my escape. Although I'm grateful, I've told him that so large a group would be too conspicuous. I'll take only my good friend Mutesa, the man who first dragged my exhausted body out of this high jungle, along with two or three others armed with some of the better French and American automatic weapons. We'll make straight for the coast, where I hope to find passage to a place even more remote than these mountains.
It seems years since fate cast me among Dugumbe's tribe, though in reality it's been only nine months; but then reality has ceased to have much meaning for me. It was a desire to get that meaning back that originally made me choose this place to hide, this remote, beautiful corner of Africa that has been forever plagued by tribal wars. At the time the brutality of such conflicts seemed to me secondary to the fact that the ancient grievances fueling them had been handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth alone; I thought this a place where I might be at least marginally sure that the human behavior around me was not being manipulated by the unseen hands of those who, through mastery of the wondrous yet sinister technologies of our "information age," have obliterated the line between truth and fiction, between reality and a terrifying world in which one's eyes, ears, and heart can no longer be trusted.
There are no newspapers here, no televisions, and above all no computers, which means no damned Internet. Dugumbe forbids it all. His explanation for this stance is simple, though no less profound for its simplicity: information, he insists, is not knowledge. The lessons passed on from one's elders, taught by the wisest of them but recorded only in the mind, these, Dugumbe has always said, represent true knowledge. The media I've mentioned can only divert a man from such wisdom and enslave him to what Dugumbe calls the worst of all devils: confusion. There was a time when I--a man of the West, the possessor of not one but two doctorates--would have laughed at and disdained such beliefs; and in truth, during the time I've been here the laws and folklore of these people have come to trouble me deeply. Yet in a world stuffed full of deliberately warped information, of manufactured "truths" that have ignited conflicts far greater than Dugumbe's tribal struggles, I now find myself clinging to the core of the old king's philosophy even more tightly than he does.
There--I've just heard it. Distant but unmistakable: the thunderous rumble that heralds their approach. It'll appear out of the sky soon, that spectral ship; or perhaps it will rise up out of the waters of Lake Albert. And then the burning will begin again, particularly if Dugumbe attempts to forcefully resist the extraordinary brother and sister who command the vessel. Yes, time is running out, and I must write faster--though just what purpose my writing serves is not quite so clear. Is it for the sake of my own sanity, to reassure myself that it all truly happened? Or is it for some larger goal, perhaps the creation of a document that I can feed out over what has become my own devil, the Internet, and thereby fight fire with fire? The latter theory assumes, of course, that someone will believe me. But I can't let such doubts prevent the attempt. Someone must listen, and, even more important, someone must understand . . .
For it is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge.

I have loved most all of Linda Howard's book, but this one just didn't do it for me. I thought about putting it down a couple of times, but I hung on to see how it was going to end. I guess I'm just not a fan of the sci-fi stuff, and the whole time travel thing just didn't grab me. She's a great author though and I'll keep reading her stuff.

I really like this book. It seems to get rather mixed reviews wherever I look, but it is one of my favorites by this author. A romantic suspence tale about a contemporary cop, a woman from the future, and the secrets that lie in a missing time capsule. Knox was a great character, and Nikita's facsination with contemporary technology and everyday items was a lot of fun. One scene I particularly like is when Knox buys Nikita a cell phone and it so excited about telling her all its features, he doesn't think about how simple our technology seems to a women from 200 years in the future. And I loved the scene where Nikita tells Knox about the Pope going to the moon. Fans of romantic suspence and time travel tales should definitely give this a try.

Since I¿d read the reviews and knew this book was about time travel and sci-fi, both of which interest me, I liked it. Granted there were a few loose ends but they were minor. The character of Knox caught on with me right away, Nikita took a bit longer.

I love Linda Howard books, but this one isn't up to par, in fact, it's rather dopey and contrived. I couldn't really identify with either of the characters and not very much romance either. Good think I picked it up from the library. I would have been ultra disappointed if I'd have boought it.

I love Linda Howard books and after reading the reviews here I was a little worried about what people had to say. But I decided to make my own judgement since everyone thinks differently. So I picked up the book and I have to honestly say the first 100 pages were a little slow compared to her other books that keep you riveted right from the start. But it picked up and I could see the Howard spice within the characters. It became a good read and I was happy I did not put it away. So use your own judgement and I think you won't be let down.

After reading son of the morning it got me hooked on reading howards new sci-fi book and this one was worth the buy. I just wish the plot was a little more deep.

Well this was a disappointment. I don't know if its her editor or she just lost her edge. But this was not at all like the books that got me addicted to Linda Howard's writing. If you are new to Linda Howard and this is the first book you have read, go get her some of her older books.

I read more than half of this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I normally always finish a book, even when it's disappointing. This one was a real struggle to continue. The plot was out of this world, literally and figuratively. It was strange and this made it difficult to like the characters. This book wasn't one I recommend.

I am a fan of science fiction, mystery and and romantic suspence, but this book was just plain dumb. Poorly concieved and plotted, characters that had no depth and a story line as thin as lace - and about as substantial. From the author of Mr Perfect, All the Kings men and Open Season I expect something better than this waste of time. Why are so many romance writers delving into the paranormal and time travel stuff? Very few have the skill to carry it off. For well written sci-fi meets mystery, try Jim Butcher's Deseden Files series. Much better all the way around.

I am going to start buying Linda's book in paperback - I bought this in hard cover and it was a waste of good money. Completely implausible plot that was extrememly difficult to follow and boring! Little to no romance between the characters. Last two books are really lacking - is she writing her own books?

I am a huge fan of Linda Howard, but I have to say I have been diappointed in her last few books. This one especially. After the 2nd chapter or so, I almost put it away. Between the futuristic angle and the lack of romance, I wouldn't recommend it. Her romances are less and less hot with each book, this one would barely qualify.

I have been searching for a new writer for a long time that would peek my interst long enough to actually 'finish the book', instead of putting it down, to get to it 'sometime'. This one did it! I'm now on my third Linda Howard novel and am completely hooked...If everyone else thinks this book was horrible, I guess I simply cannot wait to dive into the ones that got their 5 star review.

I was bored with this book. I usually buy LH's books without even reading the back cover, but this book came up short. It lacked the heat of her other books. I also don't like time travel stories! - too unbelieveable and unrealistic.

Linda Howard is a genius! She wrote about the Knights Templar in her first romantic-suspense, time-travel novel, 'Son of the Morning'. I waited 8 years for another romantic-suspense, time-travel book from her. 'Killing Time' is a great read. Her heroine is likeable, lovable and tough. Likewise for the hero. The suspense begins within the first three pages and then intensifies. You know there's more coming for suspense readers, more romance for romance readers and time-travel for those readers. 3 in 1. You've got it, Linda!

very poor .. very disappointed in ..... no passion between her characters.. she takes along time for them to even meet.. no logic to story.. very disappointed as i am a linda howard fan.. but she needs to get back and remember that she is a romance novelist.. thats why we buy her books!!!!!

I wanted to like this book. I read through the whole thing hoping at some point it would spark something but I was at a loss. The characters had no spark, the main time travel story was boring and pointless but what really gets me is the lack of logic in some of her imaginings for the future, particularly in regards to data storage. The very fact that we're connected globally via internet pretty much means that information, particularly music data is incredibly redundant and destroying it is more difficult than she implies, never mind the fact that film and tape degrades to a degree that CDs do not. That could have been disregarded easily if the rest of the story had been up to her usual standards but there was neither romance nor thrill in this book and none of her usual good humor.

I found this book really slow and boring. The characters were very uninteresting, and the plot predictable. To get through it, I had to skip a few pages, something I have never done with any Linda Howard books.

I am a huge Linda Howard fan. I purchased this book without even reading what it was about - after all it's Linda Howard! What a huge disappointment to find out it was about time travel - my least favorite genre. Can't say I would recommend this. I barely got through it.
