Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A bounty of titles help new students ease their fears. Melissa Sweet illustrates two school-time picture books this season, including Kindergarten Kids: Riddles, Rebuses, Wiggles, Giggles, and More! by Stephanie Calmenson. The text, often delivered in rhyme, details the fun to be had in kindergarten, such as singing, dancing and caring for classroom pets, pictured in fiesta-bright hues with a multicultural cast of students. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Activities and special days are highlighted in the poems and illustrations in this 32-page book. From their arrival (Good Morning! How are you today?") to their departure ("See You Later, Alligator!") these kindergarteners search the classroom for Mr. Wig, the guinea Pig; celebrate a loose tooth; make popcorn; are "puzzled by this puzzle"; understand that everyone makes mistakes; and wiggle, iggle, wiggle. There are also poems for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, and One Hundred Days (in which the poem has 100 words). The poem at the end, "Kindergarten Kids," is ideal for an assembly. Multicultural children populate this classroom and seem to be having a wonderful time. Kindergarten teachers will want this for back-to-school and will reach for it over and over again throughout the school year. 2005, HarperCollins, and Ages 4 to 7.

School Library Journal
PreS-K-This appealing collection of original rhymes and riddles focuses on activities that are part of the kindergarten experience, such as attendance, show-and-tell, and classroom pets. First timers will see what they can look forward to and kindergarteners might enjoy reviewing the familiar events. The simple, interactive rhymes are occasionally forced or lacking in sparkle, but overall they provide a light, accessible introduction for new students. Sweet's delightful illustrations bring color, energy, and information to each page. A lively and fun addition.-Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Calmenson, herself a former kindergarten teacher, explores that world in this collection of original poetry. The 18 short rhyming poems address common features of the classroom such as show-and-tell, learning the alphabet and celebrating holidays, and several of the poems could be used as part of special days such as the 100th day of school. Some are written as riddles or with a missing final word to be filled in or with related movement or activity suggestions, and one of the last, a riff on the old "See You Later, Alligator" pattern, might just become a new playground classic with 19 ways to say good-bye ("time to float, billy goat"). Sweet fills her vibrant illustrations with bright citrus colors and bouncy children of varied ethnicities who help bring the rhymes to life. (Picture book/poetry. 4-6)

    great book

My four year old really loves this book. She enjoys reading it every night. I would absolutely recommend this for children beginning school.
