Fans of the minor chick-lit classic A Lover Will Take You Closer to God, rejoice: after eight years, William Elder is back. This time, he has penned a tribute to Sixties fiction, something Brautigan and Robbins might've co-hatched in their early years. It's got bodily weirdness (a woman who never removes her shoes), doper humor (this guy names his hash pipe), wacky names (Faris Fazuli, anyone?), exotic locales (Indian islands, Afghanistan), and the sweet, loopy dialog Elder is becoming known for. Pushing through themes of love, redemption, wit and reincarnation, Kindred Spirits emerges as a wild, funny, boy-meets-girl story with wide swaths of the planet and the intrigue of past lives as its staging ground. If you ever read The Magus, this is a chat with a long-missing friend.
