Description: This kinesiology book updates the first edition of 2004 with new chapter formatting, but maintains a strong emphasis on structure, function, and movement. The companion DVD includes video clips as well as access to a comprehensive, supplemental website for student and instructor resources.
Purpose: The purpose is to thoroughly cover structures of the musculoskeletal system, clarify the relationship between structure and function, and analyze forces evident during function. The book achieves these appropriate objectives.
Audience: This is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate study, with particular relevance for physical therapy and similar rehabilitation professionals. The author is a physical therapist and PhD in a graduate physical therapy program. Contributors also are credentialed experts in their disciplines.
Features: Five major sections cover biomechanical principles, kinesiology of the upper extremity, head and spine, and lower extremity, and posture and gait. Each region is broken down into individual chapters covering first bony structure and function, mechanics, and pathomechanics, and then force analyses. This organization helps comprehension and enhances organization. Illustrations are clear and detailed. Objectives precede each chapter, and clinically relevant "highlight boxes" add to the value of clinical application of material. Muscle attachments are also delineated in colored boxes instead of getting lost in the text. The easy to use companion website for students has lab activities for each section and a wide array of video clips. A chapter on the mechanics and pathomechanics of vocalization and swallowing, sometimes omitted in other books, is unique aspect of this one. Questions are included in the online lab manual, not at the end of each chapter. Chapters are brief and well written. The gait chapter emphasizes normal mechanics with most common gait deviations covered in their respective joint chapters. The only shortcoming is the quality of paper; it is thin and wrinkles easily.
Assessment: This book has a wealth of information on kinesiology and pathomechanics of musculoskeletal function. The text and ancillaries provide an excellent resource for learning. The second edition is a must read even for those who have the first edition. This book rivals two other commonly used texts in most physical therapy programs: Levangie and Norkin's Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis, 4th edition (F. A. Davis, 2005) and Neumann's Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Physical Rehabilitation (Elsevier, 2002). It deserves serious consideration as a required book for courses covering kinesiology for the health professional.
