Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Books written in graphic format are favorites of mine! It makes it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. This is especially true when it comes to reading classics. Before the story begins the author explains that it is actually not known if King Arthur was a real person, but that his name has a place in British history. That detail certainly floored me, as I am a true believer in legends. As the story goes, before the king of England died, a sword was miraculously embedded into stone and it was determined that every year at the end of the Jousting Tournament each winner could try to pull the sword out of the stone. If successful, England would have a new king. When Arthur was just a boy, he pulled the sword out of the stone, astonishing even himself. Lessons are learned, battles fought, and a gift from the lady in the Sea fill the pages with excitement, adventure, and wisdom. The artwork is wonderful and adds so much to the story. Readers will not be satisfied to put this book away after finishing it, they will instead, want to read and enjoy the pictures again and again. The author includes an excellent glossary and suggestions of Web sites for further reading. I highly recommend this book and want to suggest this as a great gift for a young boy who still likes to imagine. Part of the "Graphic Myths" series.
