Overview

Sonny Boy Williamson was an economic, dry-toned harmonica player and one of the crankiest lyricists in blues history. For years he touted Interstate Grocer products on KFFA's legendary King Biscuit Time while pumping out brilliant 78s for the Trumpet label of Mississippi. KING BISCUIT TIME gathers 16 Trumpet classics, including "Mr. Downchild," "Nine Below Zero," and "Eyesight to the Blind" ("Her daddy must have been a millionaire -- I can tell by the way she walk/Every time she gets to lovin', the deaf and dumb begin to talk"). Originally released as an LP on Blues Classics, the CD features bonus tracks of live KFFA material, which offer a delightful slice of history and essential minutiae to hardcore Sonny Boy buffs. Joe Willie Wilkens, whose Delta-jazz guitar work helped electrify the Mississippi blues sound, is heard on guitar, and Cliff Bivens provides some extraordinary vocal bass work on the sublimely spare "Mighty Long Time," one of the greatest examples of "less is more" ever captured on record.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Cub Koda
King Biscuit Time features Sonny Boy's early Trumpet sides from 1951. The original "Eyesight to the Blind," "Nine Below Zero" and "Mighty Long Time" are Sonny Boy at his very best. Added bonuses include Williamson backing Elmore James on his original recording of "Dust My Broom" and a live KFFA broadcast from 1965.
