Hans de Beer was born in 1957 in Muiden, a small town near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He began to draw when he went to school, mostly when the lessons got too boring. In college he studied history, but he was drawing so many pictures during the lectures that he decided to become an artist. He went on to study illustration at the Rietveld Academy of Art in Amsterdam.
Hans de Beer's first book, Little Polar Bear, is very popular around the world. The book has been published in 18 languages. His books have received many prizes, among them the first prize from an international jury of children in Bologna, Italy. Hans de Beer now lives in Amsterdam with his wife, who is also a children's book illustrator.
REVIEWS: "Ten brief noodlehead tales . . . that will suit kids just fine. The stories have a nice sense of rhythm, and de Beer's (Little Polar Bear) whimsical artwork is full of charm."--Booklist
"The royal couple do many . . . outrageous things; they play cocoa splash on the king's birthday; use the velvet drapes for tissues when they have colds; have their pictures taken standing on their heads; and let a stork build its nest on the queen's head . . . The full-color illustrations that appear on almost every page are charming. . . . Both the detail and use of warm colors and watercolor washes reinforce the affection the Bobbles share."--School Library Journal

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-3A collection of 10 stories first published in Switzerland. King and Queen Bobble wear wheels on their heads instead of crowns, a throwback to Great-great-grandfather Bobble, who wore a wagon wheel to remind himself that all things go around. The royal couple do many other outrageous things; they play cocoa splash on the king's birthday; use the velvet drapes for tissues when they have colds; have their pictures taken standing on their heads; and let a stork build its nest on the queen's head. Although the sentence structure and format indicate that the book is for emerging readers, the text is fairly dense and longer than that found in most beginning readers. The reading level is more appropriate for third- or fourth-grade children, but most of them will find the situations silly or absurd rather than funny. The full-color illustrations that appear on almost every page are charming, but again are for a younger audience than the text indicates. Both the detail and use of warm colors and watercolor washes reinforce the affection the Bobbles share.Mary Ann Bursk, Bucks County Free Library, Levittown, PA
