Sinclair followed his classic "muckraking" novel The Jungle with this powerful indictment of the inhuman treatment of coalminers. More than just a reformist's call to arms, Sinclair's spellbinding 1917 novel recounts the adventures of an idealistic, college-educated man who lands a job in a Colorado coal mine.
I found this book to be a truly captivating representation of the hypocrisy and oppression that the early 20th century coal miners encountered. While the plot is not as notable as his earlier work, The Jungle; King Coal is laced with it's own gruesome depiction of the corruption caused by greed and apathetic treatment toward the mine workers.
Upton Sinclair devoted his life to exposing the flaws of big industry and I think everyone could benefit from reflecting on his work.
I would also recommend Germinal by naturalist, Emile Zola or The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The latter book illustrates the life of a family of sharecroppers during the Dust Bowl while the former concerns the lives of workers in the French mines.

I looked like a pre schooler wrote it. I dont meant to hurt your feelings. I though the story was a little short and rushed a liitle. But over all it was a good story. I liked the names you picked out for your characters. Espeicialy Skyleaper. Do you mean coalpaw because cole is human name and not a warrior cat name? Please continue because its a great story!

It was an early day of Greenleaf when Colekit woke to " Colekit Colekit get up its time for our apprentice ceremony " said Lillykit his littermate . " What " !! " I forgot all about that come on lets go . " Let all cats old enought to catch their own prey gather for a clan meeting " said the booming voice of Owlstar ( the Thunderclan leader ) . " Today we have the arrival of two new apprentices , Colekit Lillykit step up here . Colekit from this moment on until u receive ur warrior name u will b known as Colepaw , Skyleaper will b ur mentor . Lillykit from this moment on until u receive ur warrior name u will b known as Lillypaw , Fuzzycloud will b ur mentor . That is all thank u " LILLYPAW COLEPAW . " Lillypaw were finally apprentices " said Colepaw . Later that evening Skyleaper took Colepaw around the territory . " Hi Colepaw we already made u a nest " mewed Eaglepaw . " How was ur first day as an apprentice " said Rabbitpaw . " It was great I saw the lake and the Ancient Oak " . " Cool " said Lillypaw . " Fuzzycloud said that tomorrow we r going hunting together " . " Yay " said Colepaw as he layed in his nest and drifted of to sleep ~ end of chapter 1
