Overview

When Ridley Scott's Gladiator singularly revived the old Hollywood "Sword & Sandals" genre in 2000, it also propelled composer Hans Zimmer's rousing score onto every movie trailer that followed in its wake, so it's surprising to find the prolific -- but relatively unknown -- Harry Gregson-Williams taking the reins on Scott's similarly themed 12th century Crusades epic Kingdom of Heaven. Williams approaches the era with a far more delicate touch than Zimmer, utilizing period and regional instrumentation, as well as lush choral arrangements to accentuate the film's romance and religiosity. While there are plenty of instances where thunderous percussion and sweeping brass paint gallant images of galloping horses and tattered flags, there are more moments that effectively portray the bloody fields and pious ruminations of war.

This soundtrack was great, but there's a missing piece. I was disappointed when I listened to the soundtrack and didn't hear "Vide Cor Meum", which was used in another Ridley Scott film called Hannibal. The movie used this touching track to glorify a funeral scene in the movie, which should have been included. Thus, leaving this soundtrack a little short of being a wonderful representation of the film.

I haven't yet purchased this soundtrack, but I know I'm going to. I fell in love with it when I saw the movie, and when I listened to it, it just seemed to get better. I could picture each scene of the movie as I heard the songs. It is just so moving, and the instruments used create such an out of this world sound. One of my favorites is the last track, "Light of Life." Natacha Atlas adds a great touch to it with her outstanding voice. (I'm going to look into her too, after hearing her on this soundtrack! She's awesome!) My only criticism is that there should have been more of her on the album.

This soundtrack was absolutley beautiful. I saw the movie and just knew i had to get the soundtrack. This is another one of William's works of art!

Hans Zimmer usually scores Ridley Scott's movies, but Harry Gregson-Williams keeps it from becoming a gladiator retread. Great as that movie and score was, HGW gives it an entirely different treatment. And to great effect.

I have never even seen this movie and I was drawn into this soundtrack. The music is amazing! The best soundtrack that I have listened to in a while. My favorite by far, I would recommend it to any soundtrack lover. I only listen to soundtracks, and this was superb. Hans Zimmer's masterpiece!
