Children's Literature - Sally J. K. Davies
Readers interested in ancient history will enjoy traveling back in time with this book about people of long ago. The first map in this book is a helpful companion to, and directly follows, the table of contents. The hand drawn world map of the ancient world on this page has tiny illustrations representing various historical sites. Each site is labeled with the name of the people and the name of its geographical area, plus the page in the book where it can be found. The book covers the civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Ancient Europe, the Indus Valley in Northern India, the Minoans, the Myceneans, the peoples of the Mediterranean, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Ancient Greeks, the Roman Empire, Ancient Africa, Ancient India, Ancient China, the peoples of North America, Central and South America, Australia, and Polynesia. Each ancient civilization has a double page spread that includes an illustrated map of the area, with major ancient cities located and tiny illustrations of the various key elements of that time. The pages for Ancient China show the Yellow Sea, fourteen ancient cities, and illustrations with little figures dressed historically doing typical activities of the time. Some figures are planting rice, doing calligraphy, papermaking, and working the field with oxen. Along the right hand side of every map, a time line denotes the centuries and lists significant dates and events. Key religious dates, invasions by other countries, some politics, major wars, important leaders, inventions, tool developments, and metal working innovations are included on this time line. On the Ancient China page, the time line starts at 600 B.C.and goes through to 600 AD, in 100-year increments. The life of Confucius, the civil war, the Qin dynasty, the use of iron weapons and tools, the introduction of Buddhism, the Mongolian invasion, and the invention of paper are a few of the entries. The back matter contains an index. This book is part of Kingfishers' "Kingfisher Atlas" series, which includes the titles The Kingfisher Atlas of the Medieval World and The Kingfisher Atlas of the Ancient World.
