Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“An extensive reference guide for horse lovers with vibrant photographs, a glossary, an index, and website, this title would be a great addition to any book collection.” —Children's Literature
School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—This revision is virtually identical to the 2004 edition, except for updated websites and some minor changes in the text. Every photograph is the same, but they have held up well and do not look dated. They actually have more "pop" here in terms of clarity, contrast, and brightness, and will provide hours of enjoyable browsing or an opportunity to find pertinent information. The first section focuses on the horse itself—breeds, life cycle, domestication, and anatomy. The next section covers many areas of horse management, including feeding, housing, grooming, health care and first aid, and equipment. The third section examines the various aspects of riding, both western and English, although the majority of the photos feature English saddlery. This striking book would be an asset to any collection, but if you have the earlier edition, purchase it only if there is a real need for a second copy.—Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA
Children's Literature
Horses have been assisting people for years, providing us with transportation, helping us fight battles and plowing fields for farmers. The Arabian horse is considered a hotblooded horse that originated in Saudi Arabia and is known for its gentle and courageous nature. Breeds of coldblooded horses include the Suffolk, Clydesdale and Noriker. Most types of horses and ponies are warmblooded including the Lipizzaner, Pinto and Appaloosa. Horses and ponies get along and enjoy being with other animals but require a big commitment from their owners. Ponies need regular exercise, shelter, food and water, and companionship. Grooming is also very important to keeping a pony in good health. Riding lessons may be a good idea if you want to compete or show your horse or just take trail rides with friends. Friendly instructors, happy horses and a tidy tack room are all things to look for when deciding where to take lessons. An extensive reference guide for horse lovers with vibrant photographs, a glossary, an index, and website, this title would be a great addition to any book collection. 2004, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 8 to 14.
