Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Originally published in 2001 as In the Light of the Moon, this collection of eight bedtime tales feature McBratney's (Guess How Much I Love You) gentle humor. Although all eight stories are originals, they feature characters familiar from folklore, such as the Tooth Fairy, as well as Henny Penny, Turkey Lurkey and company in a new adventure ("The Fox who Liked Eggs"). Some of the stories, such as "Big Bog From and Little Umbel," in which a pompous frog gets his comeuppance, have the cadence and narrative patterns of the best folk tales. Others, such as "Bargain Bear," about a well-loved teddy who belongs to half a dozen children over fifty years, are reminiscent of children's classics such as Hitty: Her First Hundred Years. Denton's cheerful watercolor paintings enliven every page and help stretch the attention spans of young listeners who are just beginning to move beyond picture books. 2004, Kingfisher, Ages 4 to 8.
