Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“From folktales to original stories, there are ghost stories for everyone...Black-and-white illustrations complete these ghostly grim tales that will haunt and delight children of all ages.” —Children's Literature
Children's Literature
These ghost stories are part of the "Kingfisher Treasury" series. From folktales to original stories, there are ghost stories for everyone. The book begins with the shortest ghost story ever told and ends with the second shortest one. From wooden-peg pirates to babies, these ghosts come in all shapes and sizes. Some are friendly, and many are mean. They haunt castles, farmhouses, schools, and towns. Spirits come from the future and from the past. Some are headless, and one is even a dancing skeleton. Some ghosts just will not go away, no matter what is done to them. A few specters are exorcised by simple farm maidens, while some spirits are shown a kindness by little girls. One baby ghost is taken home by an old woman. There is even a ghost who celebrates his birthday. Only a few humans are brave enough to meet their ghostly fears, but some actually receive large rewards for their bravery. Others lose their money to greedy spirits. Black-and-white illustrations complete these ghostly grim tales that will haunt and delight children of all ages. 2005 (orig. 1996), Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 8 to 12.
