Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Children's Literature

These would be marvelous read-alouds for school or library programs during Jewish holidays such as Passover or Chanukah.

Children's Literature
To paraphrase the old addage, you don't have to be Jewish to love Jewish Stories. These 15 tales are old and new, traditional and modern, and thoroughly delightful. In addition to folk tales like "Captain Jiri and Rabbi Jacob" and "Jacob and the Noisy Children," there are stories that help today's kids appreciate how religion fits into everyday life. In "A Mensch Is Someone Special," a little girl learns that patience and understanding will help her get along with a cranky older woman. "Tisha Be'av in Puddlewick" follows a couple of World War II evacuees from their London home to a small English town where no one is Jewish. In "Batata," by popular children's author Lynne Reid Banks, an Israeli girl fasts for the wrong reasons until her mother helps her learn to love herself the way she is. Each story in the book has a distinctive voice and each imparts wisdom along with amusement. These would be marvelous read-alouds for school or library programs during Jewish holidays such as Passover or Chanukah. In fact, Isaac Bashevis Singer's story, "The Power of Light," based on a true story about teenagers escaping the Warsaw ghetto, should be read to children of all religions, to illustrate the resilience of the human spirit. 2003 (orig. 1996), Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 9 up.
